Day-trippers who'd under-estimated the tide, apparently.

Five men who died at Camber Sands got into trouble after failing to realise how quickly the tide would come in, the RNLI has said.

5 non-swimmers put themselves in a really dangerous position and paid the ultimate price

It's hard to understand what  was going through their heads to do such a thing

It's very sad but I am not sure how having a lifeguard on the beach would change or could have changed anything.

A lifeguard might have warned them about the tide, or might have called a lifeboat sooner, though I see there are also complaints (going back some time) that there should be a closer lifeboat station.

It looks like they did not understand the tide would not come straight at them, so they could move back, but that it would surround them and cut them off from the shore, because they were on a sandbar.

media reported 25,000 people on the beach

how do a couple of lifeguards deal with that number of people especially when there are so many people who appear oblivious to the dangers

25,000, no way.

The bottom line is that no one knows yet what happened.  Even the "experts" are not sure.  Latest in a long line of Chit Chat threads where people seem to delight in guessing.

Camber Sands death toll reaches 5 | Daily Mail Online

Camber Sands had up to 25,000 people basking on the sand yesterday but no permanent lifeguards

A very rough guess then.

Ok, we know five are dead or is it six?  No one knows the cause, "up to 25,000 people" sounds like a safe guess and wtf is a "permanent" lifeguard.
