Boult is the obvious answer but probably only for the moment.
Fidel Castro or Bob Dylan are the long-term answers. |

So Usain Bolt will be globally more famous than Xi Jinping Some Chinese watch the Olympics, true, but not everyone in China or any other country is interested in athletics, far from it. The Chinese watch football. Football is globally more popular than athletics so David Beckham will be globally more famous than Usain Bolt. Xi is known all round the world, not just in China. He is more famous than even David Beckham. |

Sadly famous doesn't mean great. Could just mean you've won Strictly or can run fast.
I wouldn't recognise Tim Berners-Lee if I saw him in Tescos but he's certainly had quite an impact... |
|

If the criteria is 'who would be recognised by the largest number of people ? ' then it certainly won't be Fidel Castro , Clint Eastwood or other oldies mentioned.
Half the world's population is probably under 25 and predominantly in Asia , so people whose most famous deeds 50+ years ago will not be a factor. Usain Bolt is a good pick .Messi and Ronaldo probably ahead of him though. The Queens' fame comes from being Queen which is ongoing thing so she would be up there , though bhind Obama I expect. Mayweather + Pacquio would be up there too. |
