The way forward is as it is in Boxing, instead of weight categories we have height catogories. The 1OO metres Freestyle for those under 5ft 7in, 100 metres for White guys under 6ft. Good for the Gold industry more medals needed.

It used to be thought that athletes should have average builds but now it is all about specialisation. Not just height but limb lengths, and look at the hands on Phelps! Long distance runners tend to be shorter as temperature control becomes important -- and remember that Paula Radcliffe, who was tall for a marathon runner, flopped at the Olympics which were always run in the heat. This may also explain why world records at the Olympics are more common in sprints than distance races.
Another problem Bolt has is acceleration. He is invariably behind at the start of a race. If the Olympics introduced a 60m race, you'd expect shorter athletes to win. Gymnastics has gone the other way, especially for women -- so much so they had to introduce a minimum age. Simone Biles won four gold medals and stands 4'8". Throwers tend to be heavily built, stocky types, though I do wonder if there is not a cultural element there, as you'd have thought (without actually thinking very hard about it) that longer arms might help with discus and javelin. |

This specialisation has been going on in the UK for quite some time.
Around 8 years ago the RFU went about trying to identify future rugby stars at 11yo, my son was invited to attend a session as was considered talented. Our feedback was that he scored very highly in all the tests, but as he didn't have size 8 feet (at 11yo!) he was unlikely to ever make it. He takes up his first pro-contract this season, btw, he's still only a size 9. One of his team-mates did get taken on, he is now smaller than my son and playing socially. But expect the already big England team to get a lot bigger over the next ten years. UK rowing had a similar initiative a few years back, where they scoured schools for lanky sorts with big hands, it didn't matter if you'd ever seen a boat, they would fast-track you. The girl who won silver with Grainger alluded to it when interviewed afterwards. A few of the lads from our rugby club got hoovered up and spat out when they didn't make it. |
