Some classic responses here from the Yank press.

Slate:

"Maybe he's just a lunk, or a doofus, or a Faulknerian idiot man-child, or the real-world analogue of Moose from Archie. There are all sorts of unflattering descriptors that might apply to Ryan Lochte."

Washington Post:

"There is a special category of obnoxious American 'bro' that Lochte represents, in his T-shirt and jeans and expensive suede footwear, which he showed off on Instagram that night at the party along with the price tag. 'We're 6k deep here,' he captioned it. Is there anything worse, in any country, than a bunch of entitled young drunks who break the furniture and pee on a wall?"

San Francisco Chronicle:

"It doesn't matter what else Lochte has done in his Olympic career. This cemented his legacy: most embarrassing Olympic athlete."

New York Post:

"He cried wolf and was called on it, and that will be his burden to bear for a good long while - but not his alone. The Ugly American is alive and well in 2016 thanks to this dope."

I think it's more the personal embarrassment of the media and US posters, who mostly came out in victim support
and are now made to look like fools.

They want their revenge and to 'retain' their integrity.

As renowned philosopher Obi Wan Kenobi said
Who's the more foolish: the fool, or the fool who follows him?

Seems that Lochte and his reps are still interpreting it as robbery at gunpoint.

If what they did was vandalise a door, was it necessary to point a gun at them? (if, that is what happened) If they vandalised the door and refused to pay, then the police should have been called and they should have dealt with it (Although, quite a lot of people wouldn't trust the police to deal with it appropriatley either) There is no justification, imo, for "security Guards", if that's what they were, to threaten civilians with guns, if there was no threat of violence. Although, none of us know the full story!

Although no-one likes this sort of obnoxious, loutish behaviour reportedly displayed by the swimmers.

or a Faulknerian idiot man-child,

Incidentally, I don't know which William Faulkner character the journalist is referring to, but I don't recognise anyone like Lochte and his friends in any of the Faulkner novels I have read.

Now the facts are available and the swimmers have admitted urinating against a building, ripping a sign off the wall and ignoring requests from security to pay for the damage then fabricating a robbery at gunpoint, I take the view that the Rio authorities have been lenient with them.

The idiot manchild is the character in "The Sound and the Fury " I imagine. I doubt many sports journalists have actually read Faulkner though so it's probably from a list of stock phraes for hacks.

If you mean Benjy, I don't see the comparison with successful, but selfish and irresponsible US swimmers, yes he may have been described in that way (idiot man-child), but he is a sympathetic and sensitive character, beset with self- doubt and hampered by what would nowadays possibly be classed as some kind of autism. Not at all like the swimmers. But, as you pointed out this is probably a stock comparison for sports hacks in the USA.

I take your point, Cooperman. I was not aware of the full facts, and their behaviour certainly seems to have been reprehensible. I just wonder how many tourists (and locals) are threatened and ripped of by so-called security guards, going way beyond their remit, in the knowledge that they are unlikely to try to resist.

Yep Des you have to be aware of the do's and dont's when you're abroad. There are many areas within Rio where the Police will not venture and many areas where armed security is the only way of keeping hold of what you own.

Yep Benji is the one I meant. I agree with you that he is not comparable, hence my remark about Faulkner hardly being sports journalists' reading.
