An asylum seeker who won the right to stay here, after Lib Dem MP Stephen Williams Lobbied the then immigration minister, with 800 signatures from his fellow gullible lefty friends, Is facing prison after a sex attack...nothing surprising there i suppose
An asylum seeker, who remained in Bristol after help from a public campaign calling for him not to be deported, went on to sexually assault a woman in the city.
In 2011 the Bristol Post reported how supporters of Sivarajah Suganthan thanked Lib Dem MP Stephen Williams for his help after the Sri Lankan was released from spending 37 days in a detention centre.
Suganthan, who was still under threat of deportation, went to live with friends in Bristol.
His supporters lobbied immigration minister Damian Green to grant him asylum and Mr Williams presented an 800-name petition to the House of Commons to call for threats of deportation to be stopped.
But the Post can reveal that, three years later, Suganthan was staying at the St Julian's Trust night shelter in Wilder Street, St Pauls, when he sexually abused a 21-year-old woman.
Suganthan, 31, of Battersea Road, Bristol, was to face trial at Bristol Crown Court but pleaded guilty to sexual assault by penetration.
Anjali Gohil, defending, said the guilty plea was on a full facts basis.
The recorder Mr Towler ordered a pre-sentence report and adjourned the case for sentence on September 14.
He told Suganthan: "I won't be the sentencing judge. I would have thought a custodial sentence is inevitable."
The offence of sexual assault by penetration has a sentencing guideline ranging from a community order to 19 years in prison, depending on how it is categorised.
Suganthan was bailed on condition he has no contact with the complainant and cooperates with the making of the report.
When Suganthan was released from the detention centre in 2011 Caroline Beatty, manager of the Refugee Welcome Centre, said: "We wanted to thank Mr Williams for his help and are sure that it was his intervention that meant Siva was released.
"We are hoping that we can count on his support in the future when he makes his fresh claim."
Mr Williams said: "It was wonderful to meet Siva in person and to see that he was happy and smiling and delighted to be back among friends in Bristol.
"I am pleased that I and my staff were able to be of help."
More than 40 people met at the Council House on College Green to hand the 800-signature petition to MP Stephen Williams in support of Suganthan.
Suganthan came to the UK in 1999 at the age of 14. His initial claim for asylum was refused in 2003, and dismissed a second time in 2004 following an appeal.
In 2011 the Bristol Post reported how the father-of-two was settled in Bristol and volunteering at the Refugee Welcome Centre in Easton, signing on with police every month, until he was detained.
He was then held at the Dover immigration removal centre before the successful campaign for his release.

come on I don't think anyone is really surprised by this stuff anymore. I read a story yesterday about 2 Kurds who had applied for asylum, they had been done for smuggling cigarettes. Firstly they obviously needed a translator, they had already both been jailed before for the same thing and the judge said she had no option to jail them. What did she do but gave them 8 weeks each suspended for 12 months, £560 each in court costs which was paid for out of the public purse because they had no money. No recommendation was made for them to be deported. Did they leave court full of remorse? did they f*** they came out laughing and posing for photos with journos giving the thumbs up and saying what a great country the UK is for letting them off

A failed asylum seeker and convicted sex offender tried to abduct a child from a Bristol supermarket and threatened to "kill every British person he saw".
Amin Husseine was moved from an immigration detention centre and ordered to reside at Home Office accommodation in the city.
Just ten days after his arrival he tried to take a 10-year-old girl from the Tesco store in Eastgate, Bristol Crown Court heard.
When the little girl told him she was not allowed to go with strangers he snarled "Just come", she screamed, and though he tried to grab her she was rescued by her mum and sister.
Husseine, 35, of Shamrock Road, Eastville, pleaded guilty to attempted child abduction and theft in March.
Judge Euan Ambrose jailed him for two-and-a-half years.
He handed Husseine an indefinite restraining order banning him Bristol and banning him from all contact with the victim, her mum and sister or youngsters aged under 16
The judge told Husseine: "The obvious inference to be drawn from what you said at the time is that your motive was either sexual or violent.
"It matters not from a sentencing point of view.
"Each is deeply abhorrent. No other motive has been put forward."
'It was terrifying' - child's mum tells of her 'star' daughter The child's mum told the Bristol Post that following the ordeal she and her family are re-locating in the city.
She said: "It was terrifying, I wish the sentence was more.
"She doesn't want to be around there no more.
"We have always told her about not going off with strangers. She is a star."
The court heard Somali national Husseine has been in the UK since 2009.
Though his application for asylum was refused all attempts to deport have failed as Somalia does not accept forcibly deported people, the court heard.
While in the UK Husseine amounted 10 criminal convictions for 20 offences, including three sexual assaults.
The court heard he sexually assaulted people in a hospital and bowling alley as well as sexually assaulting a child aged under 13, for which he was jailed for 10 months.

Ian Fenny, prosecuting, said in February Husseine was released from an immigration detention centre and sent to Bristol.
Just ten days later he stole alcohol from the Tesco store in Eastgate before returning and trying to snatch the girl.
He approached her as she looked at shoes, telling her to put the shoes back and come with him.
When she told him she couldn't he demanded "Just come" but she screamed and her mum and sister intervened.
He told shop security staff: "When I get back to Somalia I will kill every British person I see and come back and abduct another child."
Lee Mott, defending, said alcohol played a part in his client's offending and he accepted it had been his fault.
Husseine maintained his motive for trying to take the girl was not sexual and he would not harm a child.
Mr Mott said Husseine had worked to address alcohol issues in custody and wanted to make something of his life.

Gins story really scares me. As a betting person I can clearly see the odds on him raping and killing a child on release aren't that big. He will be free to ruin a family very soon.

There are so many foreigners involved in crime in this country - a lot of it organised - it is out of all proportion to their actual population here. It is the same with black crime - they are now proposing even more measures to cure it. Have you seen the latest on this. If we don't they will riot (that is the implied threat)
