Sad news. It's not as if this is the first taser related death. I think they need to get rid of them. When he was up for it he was a joy to watch. MDH I remember thinking similar things about Atkinson and Hirst.

He lived over the road from me in Ipswich way back in 1989, when I was a lad, we would shout out to him and he would wave back, flash motor but on the whole you hardly knew he was there, quite sad to hear this news.
Report Mikael D'Haguenet • August 15, 2016 3:34 PM BST
Shame we only fleetingly saw the best of either, Hank. With Atkinson it was prrobably down to his lack of drive/focus. Hirst was just unlucky/brittle. I've no doubt he would've been a star. Better than Shearer!
Report PorcupineorPineapple • August 15, 2016 3:35 PM BST
Remember that Wednesday team btw. Hirst was ace but made of glass. Shame was he would have probably gone to Utd instead of Cantona if he'd stayed fit.

Hirst was the epitome of a goalscorer, scored some absolute humdingers with left right and head.
He was different class and grounded too.
Too good for manure.

Report Mikael D'Haguenet • August 15, 2016 3:50 PM BST
Fastest recorded goal is a 95.9mph effort by another Wednesday player, Ritchie Humpreys. Here's Hirst connecting with one at 114.8mph against Arsenal that would still have the crossbar rattling at Highbury if it was still there! Instincts and technique almost perfect.

Alex Ferguson tried buying Hirst six times BB. Wednesday turned him down every time. Would've smashed the record transfer fee at the time. (Can't recall exactly but we're talking 3.5-4m when the record was maybe 2.2.)

Aye anxious another one Wednesday found before you.

I've nowt against you anxious you seem a decent sort, but that manure label you carry has got an awful lot of fake in it.

Wednesday had the best of Hirst and that's how it should have been, much like Le tiss and Southampton, which is ironic in the sense Hirst was finished there.

Might've been 2, might've been 6, anxious. Whatever the number of enquiries, a quick google suggests that the fee would've been £4million. The British transfer record at the time was £2.3M.

Old Red Nose clearly thought Hirst was a bit special.

Seems such a pointless way to end a life, you would think police would be able to handle one angry man who to my knowledge wasnt armed.
Report dustybin • August 15, 2016 4:19 PM BST
Anxious.
It's different. Every DC in the land is a man Utd fan. Man Utd has no soul as a result.
It's a brand sold on the NY stock market not a team playing just outside Manchester.

I've read a couple of Frank Skinner books and there are two points I absolutely subscribe to that he makes.

The first has little semblance here (that people should be allowed to accept little money in return of being left alone by the state)
But the other is that everyone should get a map and ruler and find their professional club.

Ofc that justifies many in the support of manure, but it cuts 90% of the free loading bandwagon jumpers who have never been tested in spirit and are as feckless and shallow as they come.
Report anxious • August 15, 2016 4:27 PM BST

There are plenty of clubs who don't win owt but have plenty of pull.
What I'm saying about modern Utd is its all a facade.
Like suckling pigs at the tit of success.
Best thing for United would be to find themselves by roughing it with the rest, then they'd get respected.
Far too many associated with that club just buy into it, just as Keene suggested with his prawn sarnie remark.
Report anxious • August 15, 2016 4:56 PM BST
All clubs that have long periods of success attract day trippers and tourists, I think if you look at average home attendances for last 40 years United will be top bar a couple of years, even in the seventies and eighties when they only won a few cups

One from Ron Atkinson's after dinner set Cool

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/20754134

Did Karren Brady, who was at Birmingham at the time, really ask you if Dalian Atkinson was your son?

Yes she did. We were having a photo shoot before Aston Villa played Manchester United in the League Cup final in 1994. We're having lunch and she's reading the programme. She is going through how good our squad is at Villa and she says: "Oh the number 10, Atkinson, your son's in the team". I hadn't got the heart to tell her.

I think the police had a difficult job, a large man, a strong man, not in full control of himself.

Atkinson's brother, Kenroy, 53, told The Sun the ex-Premier League star had undergone dialysis for kidney failure and was "not in his right mind".
He said his brother had attacked their 85-year-old father, Ernest, at his home on Monday before police were called to the scene.
"My brother had lost it. He was in a manic state and depressed - out of his mind and ranting. He had a tube in his shoulder for the dialysis and he had ripped it out and was covered in blood," he told the newspaper. He got dad by the throat and said he was going to kill him. He told dad he had already killed me, our brother Paul and sister Elaine and he had come for him. He was not in his right mind.

Or was he on the ground trying to kill his father, then I might understand, the police had to intercede.

Report ebulGery • August 16, 2016 8:52 PM BST
Do you kill someone for being mentally ill?

Once he was down, what threat was he?

At the moment we probably need more information as you say Slicer.

I am not saying he was murdered BB, but he is now dead.

The taser is intended to disable not kill, once he was down it had done it's job.

He then went down 'like a lead balloon' after being hit by the Taser, an eyewitness said.

'Then he was Tasered and he fell to the floor. I heard the taser go off again a number out times, at least four or five, when he was on he ground.

‘Afterwards the two police officers starting kicking him around his body. I heard the Taser go off again a number out times, at least four or five, when he was on the ground.

Two eye witness statements, that do not look good to me.
