you think you are moving but you are not ,its the train that is moving and you are sitting still.Laugh
its called a time frame.

an inertial frame of time an motion.and you have no frame of reference.Laugh

Very interesting, Brassneck, but I need to concentrate on the tennis.

Someone has been reading Einsteins thought experiments?
Report brassneck • August 14, 2016 9:34 PM BST
SO lets say you do an experiment ,you go into a room with a bed and a toilet in it and everything you can eat for 5 days.
the room has no windows and is sound proof.5 days later you come out of the room and you are told that when you were in the room the room was put on a ship and crossed the atlantic ocean.you would not believe it because you had frame of reference to travelling over the atlantic ocean.its an illusion as far as you are concerned.
but what if someone showed you the video of the room travelling on the ship.then you have a frame of reference to travelling.

You have mushrooms with yer breakfast today?

If you throw a tennis ball up in a fast moving car... Why doesn't the ball immediately hit the back window?

"... you go into a room with a bed and a toilet in it and everything you can eat for 5 days."

Sounds good to me. Can I have my iPad? Happy

lol M_D.

mecca, because the air in the car is kept within it. If you had a soft-top with the roof down and you threw a tennis ball up in the air, you'd lose it.

oh the magic mushrooms,i forgot about them.those were the days.

You're missing the most important thing to do with all this:
You're already sitting on a planet spinning at speed round an axis that is in turn moving at great speed around a sun that is in turn moving through a galaxy that is in turn moving away from the big bang. There's nothing static about any of it, it just feels that way.

I sometimes wonder about this: if ghosts DO exist, how do THEY get their frame of reference? Laugh
Report brassneck • August 14, 2016 9:49 PM BST
good question.i think we(the earth) travel at 8000 miles either per second or per hour not sure.Grin
Report STUDYFORM • August 14, 2016 10:02 PM BST
Earth spins at about 1,000 mph, travels through space (round the sun) at over 1,000 miles a minute.
Whole solar system moves round galactic centre - don't know the speed. Galaxies nearly all moving away from each other at big speeds.
Report mecca • August 14, 2016 10:07 PM BST
I always thought that the earth spun once in 24 hours
Report Just Checking • August 14, 2016 10:10 PM BST
It does. So the speed with respect to the (moving) axis depends on where you are - on equator fastest, on the actual north/south pole axis, not at all. In fact interestingly if you stood on the actual point you'd just rotate Laugh

If you find this stuff interesting read up on Einsteins thought experiments and general relativity. It's amazing that he could derive such powerful stuff just by thinking those things through. It's all to do with frames of reference - thus the "relativty" bit.

As I understand it, I am sitting in a stationary chair and everything else in the universe is moving round me.

Old Albert and his difficult sums can't prove anything different. How do I know? Because old Albert admitted that he could not prove me wrong.

Mind you, he was banging Marilyn Monroe when he worked that out and his mental arithmetic might not have been up to scratch. He might have been a few inches off.

Just Checking -- Aristotle, the armchair philosopher, did not adhere to what is now known as the 'scientific principle'. Neither did Einstein and his 'thought experiments'.

Einstein, like Aristotle, never proved anything by repetitive experiment.

Aristotle, at least, was original in thought. Einstein nicked his "ideas".

planet is moving and spinning.
if time travel was possible? you had better
be anchored to the planet otherwise you'll
appear in the vacuum of space.
Report FlowerMyth • August 15, 2016 8:26 AM BST
SO lets say you do an experiment ,you go into a room with a bed and a toilet in it and everything you can eat for 5 days.

This is Galilean relativity except that your example is flawed. Your traveller is at first in one inertial frame, then is accelerated and then decelerated and placed in another inertial frame. Changing frames of reference gives the game away. The way the experiment should be thought of is if you wake up in such a room, by examining the physics of objects in the room you could not determine whether you were moving or not.

If space and time are both relatives, why didn't they get me any presents for my birthday?
Report FlowerMyth • August 15, 2016 8:38 AM BST
Einstein, like Aristotle, never proved anything by repetitive experiment.

To be fair to Albert, he could neither accelerate objects to significant fractions of the speed of light nor measure their length contractions or time dilations to nano metres/seconds. It was the late 19th/early 20th century after all.

The precise formulation of the time-space laws was the work of Maxwell.
Imagine his feelings when the differential equations he had formulated
proved to him that electromagnetic fields spread in the form of polarised
waves, and at the speed of light! To few men in the world has such an
experience been vouchsafed ... it took physicists some decades to grasp
the full significance of Maxwell's discovery, so bold was the leap that
his genius forced upon the conceptions of his fellow workers

I don't know where you get your stuff from Zorro but Maxwell's work was classical field and non-relativistic. You'll be telling us that he was Jesus Christ reincarnate next.
