Target all the noncompetitive events and will lots of golds. Good tactic.

The GBP can then w@nk themselves into a frenzy over *insert middle England posh boy/girl name here* winning "Gold!"

And don't forget Wiggins. Oh Sorry "Wiggo" we have to call him Wiggo now because he's such a craZZzzzzzy dude!

Target all the noncompetitive events....

What the hell are "noncompetitive events"?

How about posting a list of what are competitive, and what are not!

It matters not what are the chosen sports, and how elitis you think they are.
Whether it's Table Tennis, Dressage, Fencing, Rowing, Cycling, Triple Jump, Squash or whatever else.
These competitors devote their lives to their chosen sport, to achieve excellence and should all be applauded.

Sounds to me like you have some enormous "chip on your shoulder", and resent every group who may be superior to you!

if the `working classes` do not have the opportunity to take part in certain sports is it really such a deprivation?
if they have the talent and dedication and love of sport there are hundreds to choose from.
the question might be where are they in the blue riband 1500m, or any track and field event, or football for that matter, how are we doing in that? perhaps the poster who says he was a professional footballer in Scotland and England for 10 years could explain that.
Report FatherMaguire • August 14, 2016 8:18 AM BST
Elitism is an issue with rowing in this country, but the reason it's non-competitive is that there aren't many regattas in the Congo etc. You're competing against a tiny minority of nations and the chances of 'medalling' are massive compared to athletics.

Personally, I've got an issue with BBCs presentation - the whole thing is a Team GB benefit - they'll tell you about some british athlete who won a bronze in a minority event, interview her, and her family, but neglect to tell you who actually won - they've gone way too far with the British angle, as if there would be no reason to watch without GB success. Some of the foreign athletes, also have back-stories which may be interesting (admittedly none as interesting as 'well, fist I got tens of thousands in lottery funding...')

Got to be careful you miss something else going on at the same time though with the Olympics!!!

Ifc1971 is right though. Go and watch this in the States. You'd not hear much about the cycling there.

On another thread here I said in a post Brexit world the country needs to punch above it's weight. The Olympics is a world stage. I don't think people appreciate the benefits to any society sport and to an extent the arts, actually bring to the table.

The olympics are a political tool used by governments to portray themselves as "Superpowers". It also helps governments/hosts can rinse the tax payer to fund the circus. I wonder if a proper audit of all public spending on rio by all countries was done, how much money would have "disappeared".

Agree re BBC coverage. I'd prefer they went back to reporting rather than cheerleading.

Not sure about "non-events", eg gymnastics which in some countries is considered a prime event, including Russia, China and even in America. Look at cycling where traditionally no-one in Britain gave a damn till we started winning medals and the Tour de France.
Report DStyle • August 15, 2016 12:40 PM BST
I'm not sure it needs to be about class. The truth is that we have poured oodles of lottery money into Rowing and in particular Track cycling and it dwarfs the investment from a lot of other countries who are competing against in the Olympics. Indeed it led Arnaud Tournant to say :“Great Britain is probably the only professional track team. The rest are amateur.”

Now this doesn't diminish the achievement of winning a medal in any sport: you can only beat the opponents put in front of you. But it does lead to the rather valid question: are some olympic events more competitive than others and you'd be hard pushed to convince me that there is no disparity.

Agreed, and the same is true of golf and tennis. At least the football is under-21.

But then you remember that athletics is a professional sport too, with Usain making millions in appearance fees, prize money and sponsorship. The amateur ship has sailed.

Odd, isn't it. About 20 years ago, we were cr@p at the Olympics, winning virtually nothing. If we had a plucky Brit in the gymnastics, they would be so awful they would get stuck on the pommel or fall off the beam. People moaned like crazy as it was embarrassing. I assume Hamsterdam was happy then.
Something was done and we are now winning medals. So we must complain again!
I agree, some sports probably don't deserve a place in the Olympics, possibly rugby 7s but I wouldn't fancy telling the winners!
As for professionalism, don't tell me the USSR and East German athletes weren't effectively state funded professionals.

A lot of Olympic sports are for posh people with cut-glass British accents ( even Chris Hoy has a posh voice ). Many winners went to fee-paying schools.
And the people paying for this, and paying voluntarily are lottery players who are about as different from the sort of people they are funding as possible. Only in Great Britain could this happen, imv.

I hope all the medallists go round to a random newsagent in Stoke or Manchester and bow down in thanks to the regular punters.

Report asparagus • August 16, 2016 1:18 PM BST
There does seem to be a lot of people with a chip on the shoulder on this thread. There are people from every background in the GB team. There is very little in the Olympics that you require a privileged background to be involved in. Undoubtedly funding helps us in one or two of the sports. There is no doubt our cyclists for example have an edge in some ways over those from other countries. It doesn't change the fact that these people have dedicated themselves to becoming the best in the country to get in the GB team and then to becoming the best in the world. If you don't want to cheer them on that's up to you, but to try and turn it into a some sort of class issue is a bit pathetic.
As cantthinkofaclevername suggests it's unlikely the Germans have the same issues with success that some people on here seem to have.
