Loads of staggering statistics from the race, but:

14.46.81 through 5k, so came back in a 14.30.64
For reference the Women's Olympic 5,000m Record is 14.40.79

so 'broke' the Olympic 5,000m record with her second 5k, by 10secs

Again, as I explained on the other thread, this is quite a new event, it's inevitable that the odd person who breaks the WR will smash it to bits.

This from Paula Radcliffe..Laugh
"I'm not sure that I can understand that. When I saw the world record set in 1993, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. And Ayana has absolutely blitzed that time."

Its quite a new event?? She broke a record set in 1993 ffs

40+ seconds faster than Radcliffe could ever manage and conditions were far from ideal

Think it's about time everyone admits defeat and just stops this 4 year mockery

It was a surreal watch.
A great long train of athletes , including our plucky competitors ,being lapped after about 6k.

You could sense the TV pundits really did not what to say ,either

a) that was a piece of historic long distance running
or
b) really !%*!

Most of the field ran a personal best so it might be time to remeasure the track.

And while we are at it, can we also check the swimming pool is the right length?

Don't worry Paula, even if Ayana takes up marathon running she's still got a few minutes to find to get anywhere near your record

Yes, it's a comparatively new event, it was first contested at Olympic level in 1988. So the record in question was set five years after it became a race worth concentrating on for a female distance athlete.

And this new record is only 44 seconds faster than Paula's PB over the 10k. So Ayana has got to find another two-and-a-half minutes beyond the next best ever to break Paula's world marathon record, and she's got to stay another 20 miles.

epitomised what a freak show the olympics has become. She wasn't even tired at the end.

She beats a 17year old record set by an athlete who admitted to partaking in state sponsored doping.
