If you want to skip the link, here's the abbreviated story...

Scientists created a spliced corn variety that would convert itself into useful by products
instead of just decomposing normally. It would produce alcohol so it could be used as fuel.
but the alcohol would enter the root system of the soil - All plants can use it in tiny amounts
2 parts per million... but the GMO strain poisoned the soil to 17 parts per million. So every
plant would die of alcohol poisoning. Killing all vegetation in the planet.
This was going to be released, but just as a precaution they double checked their work
in a real world environment in a sealed shed. All the plants died.

So what has got by them - what has been released with future ramifications.

Hope they destroyed all vestiges of their samples - or did
they just put it on a shelf for a future student to take home?
