I was there last week,take the ferry and spend a few hours in Brixham.

Combined ticket.  Boat from Totnes to Dartmouth.  Steam train from Dartmouth to Paignton.  Open top bus from Paignton back to Totnes.

Not been to many that way but The Orange Tree is pretty decent.
