An athlete had to be an amateur - now they get millions from advertisers and sponsors if
they become a winner. It's made cheating more necessary.
Every athlete is now a suspect? promoting steroids and muscle building products.
no normal looking people? they are all ken dolls now?

I totally agree Zorro....the old Olympic spirit has completely gone

There are World championships for all sports, we do not need the Olympics.

The Olympics is to sport what flavour is to a Weightwatchers lasagne.

What's it matter how quickly a human can swim in unnatural conditions over 200 metres while strictly only doing the butterfly?

If you needed to save from drowning or out swim a predictor (imposs) you'd not artificially limit yourself to only one type of technique ffs.

They should send a bill for tax repayment to all that don't win gold in each event.....that will draw stumps on this pointless charade.

All sport is essentially stupid if you take a step backwards and reduce it to its basics

But don't we all fund it though?
Isn't tax payers money holding the whole thing up?

It's like the tax by association that the BBC put on television ownership.
Whether you watch strictly come sponsored infidelity, you sure as 5hit are paying for it.

The gold medals are worthless. Alot of the "sports" are shockingly uncompetitive.
Attendances seem very shockingly low.

Of course you'd expect them to be high for the athletics and on the road for the marathon etc.... but then again they are the only genuine olympic sports.

Why are you watching Racingqueen?

I'd have thought someone with your highly-developed moral compass and telepathic ability to judge who is taking PED's, would have nothing to do with this bread and circuses charade?

Indeed, that is the function of the Olympics, as opposed to the World Championships for individual sports.

Of course, we are light-years away from De Coubertin's Olympic ideal and it would be an idiot who argues otherwise. But it is a cultural touchpoint for billions of people everywhere and in that sense it does unite the world.

There's no way my clinically obese next door neighbour would have the remotest interest in Fencing (the sport, as opposed to the construct that divides our gardens Grin), yet this morning she was over-effusive regarding Richard Kruse's attempts to win a bronze medal in the Foil event the other night.

Millions of these little conversations are going on, all over the world - it's THAT that is the Olympic legacy now.

Well perhaps government sponsored Olympic PlayStation call of duty games playing can't be too far away.
I can't really see the difference to state funding of jumping juuuuuust a little bit further in a sand pit being really any different other than they might be physically fitter, but more injury prone.

Watching world records being broken like confetti. Going by WR progressions in swimming, i fully expect humans to develop gills and start randomly jumping into the sea within the next 10 years Laugh

You might want to consider supporting the Indian Olympic Team, who have very little in the way of state support.

They have an appalling 'medals-to-population' ratio, but for a purist such as yourself, keen for one's tax rupees to not be frittered away on trite guff, then that's of zero consequence.

at the top level do any players on here no if serving is a disadvantage in table tennis
Report dustybin August 9, 2016 12:22 PM BST
My old man used to play table tennis many years ago.
I was never much good and he never let me win a single game ffs, but what I did take from it was that it's very difficult to play an aggressive return to a serve since its cut so close to the height of the net you have to dig it out.

The balls were good though how you could just put em in water if you'd trodden on em and they'd pop back out.

Other than that it was a **** game

No Sport has a function Roger.

I actually meant Yes Sport has a function RogerCrazy
It has several functions

The Olympics acts as a surrogate to war between Nations...
Nations compete to get the most medals
The Olympics is also entertainment people enjoy watching it, amazingly some sports they would never otherwise watch

Sport in general also does this, although I think it's original intention was to act as a surrogate to men's innate
desire to compete aggressively with one another, to stop them always fighting and killing each other. releasing their violence harmlessly

Nowadays we appear to have a lot of angry womenSad so they need sport as a surrogate for their violence too.

People can also achieve goals in sport which they could not in any other way in life.
In fact if you good at certain sports you can become a GOD, Ronaldo springs to mind. People to look up to sports people more than anybody else
