By law do you need to have a landing net with you when fishing rivers, canals and non private ponds?

Not as far as I know, but if you do use one in private waters there are rules to observe about the size of the mesh.
And you should have pillow to place the fish on while you yank the hook out of its gob.

I don't think so but it's a good idea, just in case. Rod license, yes (ruddy theft)
Why do you ask?

Thanks for the replies.

Taking the young guns fishing in the morning. The landing net i have decobwebbed this afternoon is one of the old types and no longer usable. Planning to go very early in the morning, so it would be more convenient not to have to pop off somewhere to buy a new one.

I was just wondering if the fish to hand principle was still ok with the environmental officials who do the rounds or if they demanded a landing net net must be available.

No net needed, but make sure you wet your hand before handling the fish to prevent damaging the little chap. Have fun.

Where are you fishing? (what type of water?) and what types of fish could you catch? This will make a difference to my next answer!
Went with my young lad today, great fun catching small crucian carp, tench, perch, roach etc despite my sunburnt knees Crazy

Knotless nets now being encouraged but not legally required ,(the knots dislodge scales and open the fish up to infection/disease)

Unhooking mats a great thing as well if your fishing catch and release  ,especially for the course fishing (catch and release) but more and more people using them for the trout fisheries  up here .

I can't imagine going fishing without a landing net.

What will you do if you hook one, drag it out of the water and onto the bank?

If a bailiff saw you doing that he'd take a very dim view.

Although if there are other people fishing nearby, you can always ask one of them to land it for you with their net.

I wouldn't catch too many though.

there is long reach disgorging tools ,never used one but if the fish can be kept in the water all the better ,course fish tend to be quite hardy but small trout are not and really dont like being handled ,a fish in the ounces will be quickly warmed by hand contact fish dont do rapid  temp change .

easy enough to unhook if your using debarbed hooks .
