I sympathise with those caught up in the epic traffic jam this weekend but why do so many people travel on the first weekend of school holidays when this sort of chaos always occurs somewhere in the country? Bank holiday weekends are nearly as bad. I suspect that it is even worse than usual because the French will delight in causing problems for the Brits. I doubt if French tourists or trucks returning to Calais will find it funny though.

As we are still in the EU they should have the same rights against the ports as passengers do on planes when there are delays/cancellations.

You don't have any rights if planes are delayed or you miss a flight due to customs/immigration checks.
When the UK leaves the EU these queues will be permanent on both sides of the channel. Trucks will probably take 3 days to make it through Calais after customs checks and payment of duty vat etc.
