Do they still exist today in the land of wifi and convenience?
Well my multimedia setup blew up recently, I replaced the fuse in the driven amp base bin but it went instantaneously again as soon as I plugged it in.
Was a decent 500watts setup that connected everything together computer tv digital devices etc.

Ive been considering my options.
Im not too arsed about the home cinema approach but I gather if you want quality music and general sound for all devices you need a receiver.
Well they harp back to the 90s for me in the way we all had separates and tuned systems but I never had a receiver before.

If Im predominantly wanting a system that connects all my devices together (including computers) and am more interested in music over surround sound, has anyone got any recommendations of which way to go and which speakers too?

My Uncle liked Bang & Olufsen - I could never understand his obsession
with perfect sound systems. I'd just get a comfortable set of earphones
if I wanted to hear everything.
my tv just now has busted internal speakers. But I **** speakers to
the ear phone jack to get round that. Sound is okay.

I used to love my separates. My mate's sister worked in a hi-fi shop, so it was usually Technics gear for me. Them were the days, sitting in the dark watching the strobe on my turntable lining up in the dark.

If you're serious and want the very best ...make sure you go for Valve/Tubes amplifiers.
Never been beat - but they do cost !

dusty  Have you thoght abot a one speaker solution.
I have a naim muso compact all in one music player.

streams music by airplay, bluetooth, upnp, analogue or digitalaudio using a wired connection  from any playback device. Also thosands of radio stations.
also using  an optical cable plugged into tv or set-top box, makes it a very good sound bar for your tv.

Maybe 'true audiophiles'may denigrate such systems but for the money i am statisfied with the sound quality and versatility.

It's a receiver I need, you can't use an amp to connect AV to it, besides I have an old technics amp that has been filling in while I decide.

I looked at the soundbar option but they are a level or two below what I'm after, what I had before was a bit like a soundbar and the driven amp inside them kept buggering up.
Over the years I've been through a few sets and once the amp inside goes you have to replace the lot (though the satalite speakers still work and I'll connect those to a receiver.

I've got my beadies on a pioneer receiver around 1k and a pair of tannoy revolution floor standing speakers.
Unless the sales guy in the shop tells me of a good reason not to then that's the way I'll go.

Why a reciever? You should be able to just plug phono leads straight into an amp.  I have my TV, (Blu Ray by default) and Freeview box running straight into Arcam amps.  I use the freeview box as a media server, mp3's, videos etc  When buying your amp and speakers factor in some decent cables, don't get carried away with 'power', cheaper amps and speakers power ratings aren't real world, find the true power ratings and make sure the amp and speakers compliment each other, as a guide you should spend the same on speakers as your amp and roughly 10% total on cables.

Yeah you could do that on reflection, but it's not a proper multimedia setup it's just sound.
I want video to be ported too so I can switch between TVs and different video inputs.
I don't have enough hdmi inputs on the main to to cater for all the devices so have to keep changing them around the back.

I've had hdmi switchers in the past, they ain't cheap either but they fail after a while.

Blackbarn- aye, I've been trailing their website among some others and the ones I've got my eye on have been best under 1500 receiver and best 1000 speakers from 2015.
Then again I'm dubious in general of reviews nowadays, they are all taking contrived sponsoring deals in some form or another.

Don't get suckered in by the adverts Dusty, know what I mean.
Don't want to spend a bad penny like.

Dusty, when I was young and foolish I used to buy all sorts of expensive equipment to listen to the classical music I love. What is left of it and my large collection of vinyl records are now gathering dust in the loft for I am more than content listening to streamed music on my computer through a pair of headphones. The quality is beyond any expectations I might have had 30 or 40 years ago.
