I am very pleased, I am against private education on principle

We can stream pupils on ability, but not on parents wealth

Middle class value education more, they probably had a good education themselves

The problem for children from very poor backgrounds is that often their parents don't.
Some overcome it, but it is much tougher.

In 1971 on 1st Oct , T. May was 15 year old and in that year the school changed to a Comprehensive, so she took her 'O' Levels (now GCSEs) in 1972 and 'A' Levels in 1974 when it was a Comprehensive.

Wiki :
At the age of 13, she won a place at the former Holton Park Girls' Grammar School, a state school in Wheatley.
In 1971, the school was abolished and became the site of the new Wheatley Park Comprehensive School during her time as a pupil.
May then went to the University of Oxford where she studied geography at St Hugh's College, graduating with a second class BA degree in 1977.

Why shouldn't people spend their money how they want?  Private schooling is often a big waste of money and a way of shifting some cash out of the wealthy pockets.  It also reduces the burden on the welfare state.  Private tuition and a stay at home mum probably more effective.  Should we ban that too and force all mums to work?  Incidentally those familiies on benefits and not at work, have the time to greatly enhance their children's education, (time that working parents don't) but the majority probably spend that time sitting in front of their tv.

I sent my eldest son to private school from the age of 9 to 16.  He has ADD and he needed help that the state couldn't give, and it was a big success.  He spent the Sixth form at a state school, and it was better in many ways than the private school.  Cost me in the region of £80k, money that I could have spent on a nice car, holiday or given me a better pension.  The selfish part of me wishes I kept the cash in the pocket, but I wanted to give him, as far as I could, the same chances in life as his siblings.  Removing freedom of choice for impractical and ineffectual idealistic cobblers.

The Public school system (Private fee paying) maintains the 'Elites' and their families in the most privileged positions in society and perpetuates the class structure.

Clydebank29....your son should have had extra help within a state school.

This happened for a kid in my son's class.....he was a bit disruptive though.

The Leopard in a state without freedom of choice there is no money for education let alone to give extra help.

Money and wealth perpetuate the class structure, not private schooling.

Money does not give one class...... just enables one to buy ones kids an association with the kids of other wealthy families who may have a higher level than average in the class system.

(Used "one" as I am not referring to you as yours is a special case where you may have needed to get your son more directed attention)

in a grammar school everyone is in the same boat. the poorest kid has the right to be richest in knowledge and ability.

that is the most useful thing about school, it tires you out.

Kids were tested at 11 yo in the Grammar school system and the top 10% got in.....the rest were thrown on the scrap heap in the eyes of the Elites.

Things such as polo clubs, private clubs, media celebrity worship, mansion houses, royalty, golf memberships, horse racing, gymkanas and rowing regattas etc etc etc perpetuate social structure as much as private schooling.

If you have money you hang around people who have money.  That's just a fact of life.

In a society where you have freedom of choice at least there is an opportunity to change your way of life.  Denying freedom of choice through idealistic bs ensures there isn't.

There were plenty of working class kids who went to Grammar Schools and then on to Oxbridge.
