16-19 year olds to make them think a bit? None of that "teen rom/com" stuff. Something a bit thought-provoking but not too highbrow.

Can be a true story or based on fact or total fiction.

Ta in advance.

Bigmo - I haven't seen the 1997 one but the original(?) is excellent.

Only thing is, these kids might not be able to stick anything too "wordy" for too long.

Great suggestion though! Any others?

In no particular order I'd recommend the following:

The Kings of Summer
The Way Way Back
Life is Beautiful
Seven Years in Tibet
Into the Wild

For a description of each film take a look at imdb.com

Rush is a pretty good film not for the girls I would have thought though.

Hard to get in the 16-20 mindset many posted just wouldn't suit I would have thought.

One of my favourite films of all time is Very Annie Mary Love

Funny and sad but definitely a feel good movie.

Read the first few reviews on Amazon and see what you think.

a suggestion and one anecdote (re black and white) from me...

Picnic at Hanging Rock might make them think, although I prefer My Brilliant Career.

Re 12 Angry Men; watched it with my two daughters (15 and 12 at the time?).  First ten minutes elicited the usual boring dad rubbish and it's not even in colour.  Between 15 and 20 minutes in, they were arguing like jurors. I remember it like it was yesterday and feeling peculiarly proud.
Report s.kenbo • July 9, 2016 12:54 PM BST
I'm no fan of black and white films, but I did watch 12 Angry Men recently and really enjoyed it.
Report Mc Moonbeam • July 9, 2016 1:29 PM BST
It's a v good film by black & white standards but depends what you want to make them think a bit about Confused

Into the Wild they would love based on a True story , quite long but very fun & watchable with a thought provoking end Happy

Papillon and Midnight Express very good too. Never heard of the other. Will check it out.

Life, comedy drama, is a brilliant film with Eddie Murphy.

Being There is a very underrated film Sellers is excellent.
Midnight Express is still the only film I ever went to see twice at the cinema

Pulp Fiction could be an interesting watch for that age group if they have not seen it.
Groundhog Day also

I love most of the films mentioned, being an oldie, but just one thought about Leon.

Jean Reno who played Leon was so sexy in it, and he is not at all attractive.  He was sexy in the film because he played a hard man who had a soft, kind side - irresistible to women.

I saw Jean Reno in other films after that but he was not at all sexy in them.  I always say about an actor if I find him sexy that it was the part he played, not him.
Report Mc Moonbeam • July 9, 2016 8:40 PM BST
I was also thinking Midnight Express but wasn't quite sure what he'd want his 16 yr old to be watching .. it's like the original Shawshank .. Class film !

Gallipoli, 1st World War film about Australian involvement, but not too heavy as it follows the journey through it of two young friends from the sticks.

Always leaves a mark on me when I watch it, but I'm always pleased I have seen it. Educational, moving, sad.

Hi Mac. Hope you are well, Paths of Glory is a fine film.  my dad (still a film buff at 89.) always says anyone who says Kirk Douglas cant act, just watch Paths of Glory. I mentioned this fred to him this evening and he said Das BootCool

show them the Godfather - done.  they'll grow 1-3 years watching that film
Report themightymac • July 9, 2016 11:02 PM BST
Hi blackbarn. Fine mate. Hope you and your dad are too. Das Boot was brilliant but a tv series rather than a film, lol. Kirk Douglas was terrific. Ask your dad if he ever saw Ace In The Hole where Kirk starred as a local newspaper reporter covering a story about a man trapped in a mine? He was brilliant in that. If your dad likes war movies, there are some great Russian ones with subtitles which put some off watching. We Fought For Our Motherland was very good.

Review Imdb :

This is one of those movies that have a lasting effect on you. After watching it, I found that it has less to do with the Holocaust and more to do with the human feelings and the beautiful relationship of a father and his son. The holocaust provides the ultimate context, that brings and highlights the story and adds yet another deep dimension to the movie. No such piece of art has ever before combined laughter and tears of sadness in me before and that is the miracle of the movie. The realism of the movie is not its strong point, but then again it is not supposed to be; this helps in bringing the audiences to a state of mind away from reality, focusing on the feelings generated by forgetting about all external events and developments of the war. Despite that, the movie does not fail to point out an element of the nazi psychology demonstrated by the doctor who was obsessed with riddles. This portrayed the nazi 'state of mind' (if ever such an expression existed) as a sick mentally disturbed state. Life is really beautiful as you watch Guido's relentless efforts to make a lovely exciting experience of the concentration camp to his son. You get exhausted just watching him going through his painful day and yet you smile as he speaks to his son and makes him laugh. One can go on forever describing the creativity of this movie, but one will not be able to capture all its beauty in writing.
