Stealing is always illegal. In theory, you can ask the police to investigate. In practice, you have to take action yourself. Booby traps are illegal and the police love to prosecute anyone who uses them. Poisoning the plants will also get you grief.
However, fertilising the plants is quite okay. Some gardeners prefer to fertilise from the ground up, others prefer to start at the top. If you aren't going to eat the things, why not fertilise from the top? Instead of growing an edible crop, you're growing a show crop for exhibition. A small sign, explaining what you're doing, should keep you on the right side of the law here. |

Unfortunately two-legged rats are a protected species. Apart from minor measures, such as allowing nettles and thorny plants to grow in strategic places, one has to grin and bear it.

A sign of the times that people will stoop so low to take stuff from an allotment.
Also the fact that there are people about who don't realise that taking something that belongs to someone else is illegal speaks volumes. |

What if I was to catch one in the act of removing stuff? Well you could request his name and address in order to inform the police and ask him to return your property. Any act of violence on your part could lead to prosecution. |
