During the 1990s Aherne suffered from depression and alcoholism. In 1998 she attempted suicide and was subsequently treated at The Priory.[10]
She also suffered from bladder cancer and from a rare cancer of the retina. In 2014 she embarked on a programme of treatment for lung cancer.[10][11]
In June 2014 Aherne appeared in Manchester at the launch of the Macmillan Cancer Improvement Partnership (MCIP), a £3.4m scheme to co-ordinate cancer care in the city.
She spoke about how a sense of humour has helped her in her battle against the disease.[12] In 2016, Aherne became the voice behind the UK government's One You health campaign, to persuade people to cut down on cigarettes and alcohol.[13]
In April 2016 it was reported that Aherne was battling throat cancer[13]. On 2 July 2016 it was reported that she had died[14].

Very sad news, the poor lass suffered a lot of torment throughout a very turbulent life, hopefully she will now be at peace having provided many with joy through her writing and acting, that is the least she deserves, R.I.P Caz.

Behind her sometimes dopey characters was an astute observer of life, succinctly summed up by her Royle Family co-star Ricky Tomlinson. "Caroline acts like a dope and a dumb blonde," he once said, "but she's as sharp as a box of razor blades."

Bigmo - indeed yes,she was very sharp /observant , all what makes a good comedy writer ... weird how a lot of comedy writers often go through a life of turmoil /depression - maybe seeing life a lot differently

I never join in these threads either, but her work gave me so much happiness, and at times, the occasional tear for example The Queen of Sheba episode of The Royal Family.

The word gets bandied around sometimes but she was a true comic genius.
I was really sad when I read about the severe depression she was experiencing but she seemed like a prime candidate for that horrendous affliction.
I fell in love with her talent when I saw her doing the check-out girl and the "Scorchio" weather-girl; think that was the fast-show.
Hope it dawned on her at some point how much she was admired.
RIP.

It took about 40 comments but eventually we got there, somebody takes it upon themselves to be the centre of attention. Always the same with any R.I.P thread, if can't think of anything positive to say about a good, talented and successful person in death, then don't say anything

if a minority of one states the truth- its still the truth
I'm sorry you guys have lost something/ someone which brought fun into your lives. Personally I put her Royale Family work in the same category - no, slightly better than tbf- as 'The Office' - (no, slightly better than tbf)- just peurile unfunny stuff for me
If it was Lung cancer its a terrible blight - these days for smokers its a self inflicted injury - when i was in my early 20's i stood in a hospital room with plastic bins full of lungs cut out because of smoking/cancer - I was lucky to get and take on board that life lesson.
Hopefully Vaping will be better for all you current smokers ......

The reason I asked lmfao was that people affected by Asperger's have a great belief in the importance of the truth. Also, very little comprehension of whether behaviour or comments are appropriate.
It struck me because both of these facets were included in one short posting.
In what context did I ask you Culvin?

I liked her, never seemed the slightest bit full of herself despite her talent. Cancer certainly put her through the mill - four different cancers from the word go, one or two may have been metatastic or maybe none of them were, life can be so unkind.

Life is unkind FlowerMyth, lost my Mum and Dad to cancer and was the carer to them both in their latter years, a horrible thing to have gone through but you have have to step up to the mark and get on with it and do what you have to do

Same for me Slippy, both died from cancer. When you read news like what Caroline Aherne had you know that there's a family there that while not suffering the same kind of pain have their own nightmare to contend with. I was 'lucky' both my parents died in a hospice (10 years apart)- those people are marvelous in so many ways.
