The media seems to think the French and Dutch will call their own EU membership referenda in the near future. My own view is that they will never be given the opportunity.

I agree. The Dutch political system is clogged up and the French will try to beret it.
Where there is a will there is a way.
The Dutch (including the PM) are clammouring for it.
The EU is a bit like when your mum makes the eldest brother allow the little brother to hang around with his friends.
It's a union with inexorable ties. But ultimately after a forced coalition and oft used mantra of 'better together' there follows a lot of resentment and acrimony followed by an inevitable parting of the ways.
