Over 40% postal vote in a city. That seems odd to me.
|
|
By:
That's about what you'd expect
e.g. General Election 2015 Houghton and Sunderland South Valid Postal Votes: 22950 Total valid Votes: 38489 At 59.60% this was the highest % postal votes in any UK constituency. Many other NE constituencies in the 40% area. Just ask if you want any more. |

I've been very uncomfortable with the postal vote business for a long while.
|
|
By:
good stuff bongo

|
By:
Wow. Is it just in the NE or does it happen in big cities nationwide? What are the reasons given?

Top 10 constituencies by postal vote at the 2015 GE:
Houghton and Sunderland South 59.60% Washington and Sunderland West 57.50% Sunderland Central 56.20% Newcastle upon Tyne North 51.90% Newcastle upon Tyne Central 49.10% South Shields 45.60% Blaydon 45.10% Jarrow 43.20% Stevenage 42.60% Doncaster North 42.10% This is a guess ( as I kept the data for a different purpose ). Most of these are strong Labour areas ( not all ) with low labour mobility and low mobility generally. It makes sense to save money and encourage your hard core support to register for a postal vote. It saves quite a bit of money from party funds compared to taking people to the polling station on the day by car and mini-bus. Labour funds being especially tight as union dues have dropped away. |

Ok, I get the NE ones with the assembly tie in. Stevenage looks a bit of an anomaly on that list. Do you know roughly what the postal % would be in a standard town or city?

The 18 lowest postal vote %s at the 2015 GE were the Northern Ireland constituencies where postal voting has different rules - medical justification typically required.
|
|
By:
Excluding Northern Ireland the ten lowest constituencies for % postal votes at the GE 2015 were:

That postal vote in Sunderland is slightly below what you'd expect. If this was a General Election you would say it's a bad result for Labour by a single % or 2.
What that means for the Remain-Leave split, I don't know, but it could slightly favour Leave. Please don't bet on this analysis though. |
|
By:
sunderland are leaving as far as im aware

Sunderland was expected about 54% leave - BBC rumour is that Leave is 62%

Sunderland could represent a big swing in Labour seats, mostly they will get high turnouts so the extra majorities may be an issue.
