That's about what you'd expect e.g. General Election 2015 Houghton and Sunderland South Valid Postal Votes: 22950 Total valid Votes: 38489
At 59.60% this was the highest % postal votes in any UK constituency.
Many other NE constituencies in the 40% area.

This is a guess ( as I kept the data for a different purpose ). Most of these are strong Labour areas ( not all ) with low labour mobility and low mobility generally. It makes sense to save money and encourage your hard core support to register for a postal vote. It saves quite a bit of money from party funds compared to taking people to the polling station on the day by car and mini-bus. Labour funds being especially tight as union dues have dropped away.

Ok, I get the NE ones with the assembly tie in. Stevenage looks a bit of an anomaly on that list. Do you know roughly what the postal % would be in a standard town or city?

That postal vote in Sunderland is slightly below what you'd expect. If this was a General Election you would say it's a bad result for Labour by a single % or 2. What that means for the Remain-Leave split, I don't know, but it could slightly favour Leave.
Please don't bet on this analysis though.

Newcastle tends to be more cross section with a large quantity of students who were expected to back Remain heavily with Labour getting chunks to follow the party line. That deficit of expectations could be ominous for Remain.

A lot of those civil servants are hacking in their motors daily to Four Lane Ends from areas like Northumberland and Wearside. I'd expect Newcastle Civic Centre is a contender for biggest employer of constituents, as well as the 2 universities.

OK bb but it get nauseating that Milipede,Eagle, etc all parrot the line that it is a protest vote about austerity when Labour were confident of delivering a Remain majority. If I hear one more politician saying we have to listen I will smash my TV.
