Turkey was a fairly secular country (albeit with a propensity for military dictatorship) but in more recent years the Islamists have become more dominant and the government leans that way too. That may be one reason why people want to leave.

One reason Islamism poses a real threat is that it does not take many of them if they have easy access to guns, bombs and people willing to die because they really do think God will give them a short-cut to paradise.

Islamism then sets off a vicious circle -- scare off the tourists; tank the economy; more angry young men with no jobs, no prospects, susceptible to the message that Western-style capitalism has failed so they should join the Islamists -- leading to even more violence and even fewer tourists and jobs.

absolutely (though, small correction: Turkey was founded as a laicist, not secular, country). Yesterday after the attack a spontaneous demonstration formed with hundreds of people against the AKP and their handling of islamistic forces, which was put down with tear gas and water throwers.

On the same day a gay pride event was cancelled out of security reasons by the government. So they can put down anti-islamic, anti-government demonstrants down with heavy gear but they're unable, more like unwilling, to provide security for a gay pride event.
