The problem with cancer drugs is the cost is it not?...the NHS is not a bottomless pit
I would like to see everyone with cancer being given the drugs thy need. If we had lost the battle of Jutland the course of WWI may well have been changed. If the Germans had attained superiority over the British Navy they would have starved us out. We would have been forced to surrender or at least make a truce and cease fighting the Germans. You have a point over WWI Cardiff. But we must still honour our dead. WWII came out of WWI sadly. Our Empire made this country rich. |

don't get me wrong..... ive think remembrance day should go on for ever but battle of jutland...........where do you stop??......we should never forget the brave people who died in both world wars but to waste tax payers money on every battle we have ever fought is a waste of money better spent on the people who are living now

Jutland was just the start of WW1 ,Germany had already began an offensive ,including shelling Scarborugh ,Whitby and Hartlepool
Germany had designs ahead of its station and we had to stand up to them . This is just the start of this Commerations ,The Battle of Jutland should be marked ,it never really has been and at 100 years i dont think there is any lavish amounts being spent ,in fact todays rememberance service looked low key but marking it is the important thing. There was a big loss of life but was small compared to what followed . RIP the dead ,horrible way to settle differences but what is the alternative to war when an agressor is hell bent on destruction ? |

True breadnbutter
We are in the process of marking the 100 year centenary of WWI Britain dead 658,700 British wounded 2,032,150 British Missing 359,050 Total 3.050,000 These must be honoured If we had not joined, I think Germany would have won. We helped hold France up until the Americans came in. It was a war of attrition. Ludendorff knew he could not win once America entered the war. He made peace with Russia, launched a last desperate offensive in the West 1918, but failed. After that he sought a truce, which was finalised in November 1918. |

We have to add to that British Empire dead.

I can think of a lot of examples of wasting taxpayers money..... commemorating our war dead ain't one of them

WW1 was a pointless war as are most, but we didn't start it, and once it had started it was very much not pointless.
Unless you think a not very democratic aggressive Germany slaughtering its way through Belgium and France then totally dominating all mainland europe would be a good thing. I don't care if Blackadder had a different take ... |

The causes of WWI are still in dispute...so all views may be given
I think Germany did want war sooner than later. The cause of course, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, on 28 June 1914, by Serb Nationalist's. Russia announced it would support Serbia's claim for independence. German committed themselves to support of the Austria-Hungarian empire. France were allied by treaty to Russia. Great Britain had a choice but decided to come in against Germany. We did not want a German dominated Europe. The only way I feel it could have been prevented was if it had been contained at source, between Austria-Hungary and Serbia. Once it got outside of that it seemed to gather a momentum of its own. I think we fought both WW's because we thought it was right, but we could not afford either of them tbh. We have lost more ourselves than we ever won fighting them, that is my own opinion |

We can stay say we were right to fight I feel, which is something. More so in WWII than in WWI I feel

I think it was the appalling slaughter for four years over a few miles of France which got to Blackadder and others.

There are some things in the military that are without question extremely nice and pleasant, like marching to music.
And the moments when the officer calls "At ease!" |
|
By:
There are other things that affected to start of WWI, including the personalities of Kaiser Wilhelm and Tsar Alexander of Russia.
