Not sure how clever it was to show several cars parked illegally on a motorway hard shoulder! Evans needs to calm down a lot to make this work; like Le Blanc so far.

That latest episode about converting Estate Cars to ambulances - driving them around an army training camp town, with dummies (as patients) being flung out of the back, by manic driving - was like a poor attempt at a Monty Python sketch - and just as infantile.
Evans and Le Blanc will never be able to imitate Clarkson, Hammond and May - especially the self-deprivation element of the last two.
Clarkson, Hammond and May could have made a half-hour programme about jam making appear funny - and perhaps they 'got out' at the right time, as Top Gear had become less and less about the car/motoring element - and often denigrated to simply slap-stick.
It was, and had been for years, just a comedy show for Clarksons ego.
But, they were quite good at comedy - apart from the previously referred to recent farces.
If Evans and Co attempt to replicate that - then they can only fail - because they will always be judged against the UNachievable.
Top Gear had become too silly before the bust-up.That latest episode about converting Estate Cars to ambulances - driving them around an army training camp town, with dummies (as patients) being flung out of the back, by manic driving - was like a po
dreadful first episode fast forwarded through most of it
Only bit that was decent was Le Blanc in the nomad
As others have said, I cant believe theyve just tried to replicate the old show

That was one of the funniest things I've ever seen

More laughs on this thread than Evans has managed in a whole career.

Guy Martin has shown real passion for is TV exploits, you can't fake passion. Unfortunately for the BBC he opted out, mainly because he didn't want to be THAT famous. Good on him, but that real passion is hard to fake, and that's the problem, Evans is a fake.

I just stumbled upon it without knowing it was on.
Never liked Chris Evans, though he's better on radio where you can't see the egotistical ugly ****!
They may as well have had realistic Clarkson & Hammond masks on, and when they got to the bit "some say he drove himself home from hospital, when he was born" bit, it was all too much for me!
I thought Le Blanc was a bit "awkward" but maybe he will settle into it given time!
Have to wonder what his pay deal is, considering the cast of "Friends" were reported of getting $1,000,000 per episode!

Chris Evans was the wrong choice for this show (although I also thought he was the wrong choice to replace Wogan on Radio 2 Breakfast, but he is very good on that breakfast programme). However, totally wrong for TG, agree with first comment, it's a bit like TFI Friday/Top Gear, reckon Evans is going to be a massive flop here. Matt Le Blanc was excellent. Surprised at all the fuss on social media, but seems the fans were unimpressed with Evans to say the least !!

I think Evans said on the radio that they would have already filmed the studio section of the second show before the first one went out, so wouldn't be able to make significant changes. I guess you might see changes on the third show, although they film that on Thursday.
Be interesting to see what he says about it tomorrow on the radio

The problem with Evans and (the surprisingly good) LeBlanc is that their personalities do not match their assigned roles.
Evans has replaced Clarkson as the main presenter but personality-wise, Evans is Hammond; LeBlanc is Clarkson. Evans has manic enthusiasm and a high-pitched voice; LeBlanc has a deeper voice and sardonic humour.
Which by a process of elimination means Sabine is James May. Hmm.
There is no reason Top Gear can't work with the new team but they need to make it their own, not an homage to the last lot. Evans is a better interviewer than Clarkson, and at least as good a presenter but he is different.
Beyond that, the Reliants to Blackpool challenge looked too contrived: what was the point? LeBlanc in the Aerial was great, and the Viper too -- but the comedy challenges at the end of all the pieces felt tacked on and fell flat imo.
Top Gear Extra -- Rory was trying too hard and I'm not sharing the love for Chris Harris, but perhaps there was a touch of first day nerves and things will improve as both get more on-screen experience. What was noteworthy is that the news segment of old Top Gear had been moved to Extra.

@Aunty Post -- Have to wonder what his [LeBlanc's] pay deal is, considering the cast of "Friends" were reported of getting $1,000,000 per episode!
This is one reason for opposition to the government's plan to make the BBC reveal stars' salaries. It's not that the BBC overpays them -- just the opposite. The BBC gets away with underpaying stars because of the kudos of being on the BBC. The danger is that big Hollywood stars will have to say "no" if making this public undermines their American earning power.

After the exit of Clarkson, May & Hammmond, I think a different approach with the presenters might have worked, and also make it less blokey. Reckon Suzi Perry and Matt LeBlanc would have made a good pair to overhaul hosting the show, LeBlanc was a lot better than I expected last night. To be fair didn't think the new show was that bad, it wasn't brilliant, and the main problem was Chris Evans and he got an absolute pasting on social media after the show last night.

What BBC execs / Guardian readers / Clarkson haters can't acknowledge is that is was the blokeyness that made it successful (and funny) - whether ripping into each other or making jokes about Indians or whatever.
Take that away and you're left with what we got last night - rather bland, flat but perfectly acceptable telly.

It may well be that whichever presenters they picked it would not have been as good , this certainly wasn't.
The chemistry was missing and their decision to remove the school boy humour was delivered .......and hence it was flat , dull and boring. We watched a couple of old episodes afterwards and were laughing our heads off , I for one did not chuckle once in the new show.
It may be slick and professional ,not dissimilar to the terrestrial horse racing coverage , that too lacks characters nowadays.
The trip to Blackpool was dullsville , the Top Gun bit was worse ,listening to how a very rich man has a key to a very exclusive new car was nauseating and the two main presenters have a lot of work to do on their double act.

I like Le Blanc and would even say he's saving the show which probably should have been retired when Clarkson left.

James my son, and my grandson, were on "The One Show" and James said he was cool, and a good guy.
Lucas was only four, but was taking it all in his stride when he was in the taxi with Evans, and the girl was pulling it with her hair.

I don't see any typos there at all, scandinavian_haven, just malapropisms. Standard comedy device. Arthur Daley's whole character was built on them, and the world was his lobster.
I mean, I don't recall the old Top Gear presenters depriving themselves of much, which is why they got into so much trouble. They did deprecate themselves a lot though.
Not exactly hilarious, I agree. But then, I was comparing it to Chris Evans.

Was like a tribute act to the real thing. They had the chance to make so ethi g new. You can just see the directors holding up cards that say be like clarkson.
And to have to see that egg frying dildo showing us his new car keys was the tipping point for me.

That was odd. Ramsay and his new Ferrari key which was greeted by tumbleweed.
But then you remember that Chris Evans collects Ferraris and co-owns a dealership. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/cars/gallery/top-gear-presenter-chris-evanss-car-collection-in-pictures/
So it could have been an interesting item but instead of being himself (ie a complete petrolhead) Evans was stuck imitating Jeremy Clarkson.

Missed it yesterday so this is "in running" from iplayer.
It suffers from the same problem as Fifth Gear -- too many presenters. We had Chris Evans driving the Audi, then Sabine driving the Audi, then the Stig driving the Audi.
Over to Chris Harris in a Ferrari. He's got a good following but I was unimpressed. He's not got a good voice and it is too close to the pitch of the engine to be clearly audible, though maybe this can be tweaked in production. His "xxx-y" neologisms such as explody seemed childish.
The star in the reasonably-priced car involved more blatant plugs including film extracts. It also went on forever.
Rory in the Focus, Honda Civic and Merc A45.
Matt and Ken powerslide round the sights. Carporn meets Londonporn.
In conclusion, this was more Fifth Gear than Top Gear: one for the petrolheads rather than "cocking about with cars".

RS section was excellent and I hope the black presenter who did that is featured more heavily as he was brilliant
I normally fast forward through stars in cars but Anthony joshua and Kevin Hart were very entertaining
Ken block did us hoolican stuff round London.
Agree the Ferrari section presenter wasn't great
It was nothing like fifth gear and if you if you dont enjoy episodes 2 and 3 than I'm not sure why you'd watch top gear as it's clearly not a show for you

The items were good. Better in some cases than some of the nonsense the old team filmed.
But it was less than the sum of its parts. There was nothing holding it together. It was like watching half a dozen youtube car videos in a more-or-less random order. It is lazy to blame lack of chemistry between Evans and MLB, but the sheer number of presenters does not help.

Again, the individual items were good, but disconnected from each other. It was like watching a Top Gear tribute band.
And what was the point of the chefs in the Venice race? Cooking on hot engines is a thing, so it could have been an interesting component of the race, but having a Michelin-starred chef spatchcocking chickens in the back of a Jag wasn't that interesting.
The Aston Martin footage from Dubai had a CGI feel, almost as if it were a video game. Probably there is a good technical explanation for that, but I found it a bit disconcerting.
The Stig seems redundant, since now he is just a racing driver doing timed laps in cars we have just seen in timed laps driven by the racing driver Chris Harris or the racing driver Sabine Schmitz.

Matt le Blanc is better that I expected. Evans is worse though, he gets too excited over the simplest thing. I'll continue to watch it. Tonight has a feature on the Jaguar F type SVR which could be decent.

I think Chris Harris and Matt Le Blanc are superb and even I liked the studio bit with Tinie Tempah this week

These three are starting to settle into the roles now. The last series they tried to be the same as the old top gear copying the personalities and presenting style. This time they are letting them be themselves.
