Anyone with a nut allergy is playing Russian Roulette by eating from take-aways but this owner was reckless to say the least.
It was a death waiting to happen. |

I don't think it was a tough sentence. If someone had killed some after drink driving every night for months and after causing a near fatal road accident a few weeks before then it wouldn't be a tough sentence. For me, this is worse. Plus he denied the offence and showed no remorse.
Plus it sends out a clear message. |

Thinking about the article again it says he swapped almond powder for peanut powder. Yet the reporting talks about nut free and not peanut free. Almonds are nuts too

Initially, I thought it was a hard sentence, but he had previous.

Yes Clydebank
No idea when almonds stopped being nuts. Also there is no guarantee of there not being cross contamination between utensils in these take-aways. Someone with severe allergies should never risk this situation, especially alone, there must be someone with an epipen on standby. |

Almonds are Drupes
Peanuts are Legumes |

The only way to be certain you are not allergic to almonds if you have a peanut allergy is to be tested by a board-certified allergist. Even if you test negative for an almond allergy, your doctor may still advise you to avoid eating any type of product containing tree nuts. That's because manufacturers who use nuts often process peanuts and tree nuts on the same equipment. A small amount of peanut contained in a tree nut product may cause a severe allergic reaction.

I had no idea an almond was not technically a nut. You learn something every day. For the purpose of "nut allergies" is it not considered a nut in the same way a peanut is?
fwiw I never have Chicken Tikka Massala, Lamb Pasanda and other creamy curries. They always give me diarrhea. I had isolated the curry trigger to almonds and since then I've never had the runs after a curry again since. Even though I am not allergic to almonds in chocolate bars or marzipan. |

Bit like eggs, I can eat cakes no problem, but can't eat meringues, mayonnaise made from eggs or brioche bread.

Lovely Clydebank. I'm so glad that you shared that with us. It's worthy of a thread on it's own in my opinion. What makes me **** and what's the consistency? Could bring the forum back to life.

The owner is an absolute criminal. He had previously been convicted. He continually used products with peanuts in them, despite being waned. He repeatedly lied and tried to deny he was in the wrong throughout the trial. Has shown no sympathy or contrition.

The first thing to establish is the difference between a food allergy and food intolerance.
Making statements that confuse the two is not very helpful. |

Why didn't he just put may contain traces of nuts of the menu's would have saved loads of hassle.

He deserves it. It wasn't a random occurence, the victim specifically asked for something that must not containt nuts and he irresponsibly said it didn't, when it did, and the victim died. Someone whose job it is to create food must know about food allergies, I'm sure he did and cut corners to save money anyway.
Must be said if I had a food allergy I'd avoid takeaways I didn't know "in case" but that's not relevant. |

It's Cadbury's fault. Everyone thinks almonds are nuts because of their fruit and nut bar. I guess Fruit and Drupe bar doesn't have the same ring to it.
When I was figuring out that almonds in curries were the trigger to my **** I also found out that certain almonds contain cyanide and can kill you. So don't anyone go eating wild almonds on holiday. |

re 'Almonds are not nuts?'
I've personally suffered nut allergies all my life, but almonds dont affect me for some reason. Neither does coconut. |

The wild form of domesticated almond grows in parts of the Levant (that's Cyprus Israel Egypt and the Middle East connecting them) almonds must first have been taken into cultivation in this region. The fruit of the wild forms contains the glycoside amygdalin, "which becomes transformed into deadly prussic acid (hydrogen cyanide) after crushing, chewing, or any other injury to the seed."[10]
Wild almonds are bitter, the kernel produces deadly cyanide upon mechanical handling[clarification needed], and eating even a few dozen in one sitting can be fatal. Pretty sure they also grow in Spain and Italy too |

Sentencing him, Judge Simon Bourne-Arton, the Recorder of Middlesbrough, said Zaman had remained "in complete and utter denial" and ignored warnings from officials after 17-year-old Ruby Scott suffered a reaction to a curry, three weeks before Mr Wilson's death.
