I sold my road bike, as frankly I wasn't safe on it, with the skinny wheels etc, but still want to be out in our beautiful countryside and gentle exercise.
Answer, I thought, get an electric bike with power assist when pedaling, and full electric when not.
Big mistake, despite researching the subject.
I bought this one.....http://www.e-bikesdirect.co.uk/Item/Brands/Green_Edge/Greenedge_CS2_Electric_Mountain_Bike_Pre-Order.aspx
First it is far too big for my short arse, and then is ridiculously heavy (a fair bit of it is in the battery, but they don't quote that)!
It will need electric assist just to compensate for the weight.
The bike is certified to give pedal assist up to 15.5 mph but, because we are in our wonderful country, we are restricted to 4.9 mph on full electric, and there is no throttle!
So it's going back (reluctantly) and I lose out on the the carriage cost.
I could try and get a hybrid that isn't over heavy, but "the kids" are worried I will fall off as I have little feeling in my feet.
Going to have a look at recumbent trikes, of which you hardly ever see, but no problem with stopping and re-starting.
Anyone know anything about them? I'm surprised how cheap they seem to be, but most seem to have direct pedaling of the front wheel, and no gears, which can't be ideal I think!!
Why is a road bike less safe than any other type of non-recumbent bike? What difference do skinny wheels make, unless you're cycling over tram tracks oop north?
Being a cyclist is no more dangerous than being a pedestrian. The risks are so negligible whatever type of bike you ride that I don't see why you should give up on a road bike even if there really is a higher safety factor with some other type.

@Aunty Post you can't see what you bought but thinking it's not a fold away electric bike? Because mine is easy to mount (bad choice of word on chit chat) and although quite heavy the low centre of gavity makes it very stable to ride even at very low speeds.

Bought myself one of these Aunty, for using when I go out with the caravan.

Have to say I'm very impressed with it. You have to cycle at all times, but with various levels of assistance.
