Yes Degs, was gonna start a thread on here about it. I'm asking a question on Facebook atm about drilling a hole in the lens cap of my scope to stop down the Sun's Ray's. Been told it's a bad idea. I know the damage the Sun can do when magnified, I melted an eyepiece projecting the Sun when I first got my scope.
Full Sun for here tomorrow! Looking good but wish I'd have bought a solar filter so I could have used my scope. I've a few pair of binoculars that I can use but I don't have a tripod. I've been tod just to put a pinhole in a piece of paper an project the Sun's image onto another piece, I shoul see the planet that way. Despite many years of observing, I've never seen Mercury (seen all the other planets). |

I did the Venus 2004 transit with binocular projection, but you're right, you need a tripod.
I have a "solarscope" projector that I bought for the 2012 Venus transit, but didn't need it. I tried it out today and there is a group of sunspots that I could easily make out. I also have a filter for a 1000mm camera lens I can use. None of that is the slightest bit of use if it's cloudy/rainy as forecast for here though. That's astronomy. |

Was it you who took the photo's from the beach for the last Venus transit? I remember seeing one great photo that had everything that could have won an award. Birds flying, and the sun peeking through the clouds with the small black dot of Venus. Wish I'd have saved that image. If not you then I wish whoever took it would post it again as it was a great photo.
I'm not an early morning guy so this transit is perfect for me. I'll definitely have a go at viewing (by projection!) and hopefully take a photo or 2 to share with Chit Chat. |
