New series. Cillian Murphy returns as Birmingham-based mobster Thomas Shelby in the third run of author Steven Knight's period drama. At the end of the last series, having outwitted his enemies once again, Shelby announced he was getting married - but who to? At last the long-awaited ceremony has arrived, but in the middle of the celebrations, a mysterious visitor puts the entire Shelby family in danger, pulling the mob boss into a web of intrigue more lethal than anything he has yet encountered. Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundle and Joe Cole star as the family, with an appearance from Alexander Siddig (last seen as Dorne ruler Doran Martell in Game of Thrones)

Watched it, not impressed.. Why was 90% of male dialogue uttered in a furtive whisper ?

Dreadful first episode
![]() Only redeemed by the ending scene which was like standard peaky Blinders |
By:
Turned it off after 5 minutes because of the excessive "strong" language.
By:
I enjoyed watching it.
By:
Awful. A Hovis advert for gangsters.
By:
I cant understand the praise this programme gets. Over stylised, full of the same moody shots of Peaky smoking and thinking deep thoughts. Takes it self far too seriously.
All in all a big bag of brummie shoite. |

Glorification of lowlife. Turned off after 5 minutes.

On again...

By:
Consistently good. One of the few series we produce which can hold its own against American drama.
By:
A bit over-stylised at times.
By:
Could be just the music though.

By:
Interesting technique young Shelby used there when he cut the Italian.
Razor blade sewn into his hat? That's a bit far fetched. |
By:
I presume you're joking Crips?
One of the few supposed historical accuracies about the programme relates to their nickname of the peaky blinders and the razor blades. |
By:
Not according to my mate Carl Chinn Eo.

From above link :
“As for the razor blades? They were only beginning to come in from the 1890s and were a luxury item, much too expensive for the Peaky Blinders to have used. “And any hard man would tell you it would be very difficult to get direction and power with a razor blade sewn into the soft part of a cap. It was a romantic notion brought about in John Douglas’s novel, A Walk Down Summer Lane. “But I can understand why the series producers used the name because it’s infused with gangsterdom. |
By:
I bow to Mr Chinn's research. As I said supposed because that was the popular view around the time the series was commissioned. I remembered reading an article about it.

Second episode, shows back on track

I would suggest that the ridiculous overuse of the F word is also historically innacurate. The word was known, of course, but rareluy used. I was brought up in a "back to back" area of Birmingham and cannot remember ever hearing it. Bloody, bleeding and bugger were considered shocking in those days.
Why also do members of one family, who wouldn't have ever gone further than the district of Brum they lived in, all have completely different Birmingham accents or even Black Country accents in some cases? |

I like it though Tommy doesn't talk like a Brummie at all
1st series was very good .. 2nd seems a bit wobbly to start but feel there's better to come .. also have a thing for Polly ![]() |
By:
Has Lenny Henry made an appearance on the show yet?
He wouldn't have to put on a Brummie or a Black Country accent. Ee's frum Dugley. |
By:
Cillian Murphys acting is incredible. Wouldn't bother me if he spoke in a Chinese dialect.
I think it's best show ever. Well ahead of the wire, breaking bad etc |

I don't profess to know whats going on half the time but I keep watching its strangly addictive .

It's ****.
Laughable for it to be compared to the genius of Breaking Bad. |
By:
It gets more complicated everyweek but still fantastic, this Cillian Murphy is one hell of an actor
By:
Recorded it.

Very disappointed with the script writers. It's gone completely astray last week and yesterday
By:
Was there horse racing on Good Friday in those days?
By:
I tried again to watch this. I lasted about 5 mins. It really is a load of tripe.
By:
You need to watch season 1 and 2. Season 3 is like a completely different show and they've stopped doing all the stuff that made the show great.
Pol going to the confession booth was an embarrassing storyline. Tommy being a grieving wreck was a farce as well. |
By:
The luvvies have got hold of the show, look out for more ethnics, gays the odd TV and emotional displays.
By:
Doesn't seem to be a first cousin to 1 and 2, can't watch it now, very disappointing, even if it gets better (which I doubt) still not enough payback for the dirge I watched so far.

Although on the plus side, the Russian girl had very nice nips
