I am worth a lot more than £9 an hour..in my profession

But nobody will employ me now and have not done for a long time...they have doubts about my sanitySad

I think that is unfair

This job can't be that good if nobody is applying?

We write people off past 50 in our society..yet we want them to live to a 100, a complete contradiction

Reminds me of the time Bowyers had made a huge mechanical model of their product, and were looking for an experienced horseman to straddle it for a publicity stunt.

What are the job centres doing, aren't they supposed to check that people are applying for jobs that are advertised?

There are your problems - benefits are too generous and job centre staff aren't doing their jobs.

He needs to think outside the box. Relocate to Brighton and they'll be paying him for a fudge packing job especially if it's also all you can eat on the job.

fudge packer
1) Someone who indulges in anal sex, normally a gay male, but not always so.
2) A machine used by Cadbury's to put bars of Fudge into boxes for distribution
3) The opperator of the above machine.
I'm a fudge packer, I pack fudge in boxes.

To be fair, there won't be much left on the £9 working in a sweet factory after they've payed the new sugar tax.
Report annie. April 28, 2016 2:31 AM BST
The problem is that someone on social security with the house/flat rental prices as they are today would have to work 40 hours a week for nothing if they came off benefits. Who could really blame them?  I totally disagree with most of the benefit society but why would you work when social pays for everything?

There has to be change, why should alcoholics, drug users etc get paid for their habit?
Report Eeternaloptimist April 28, 2016 2:35 AM BST
The biggest issues are the cost of housing and the increasing numbers of people living in relatively few desired locations like London. Not that long ago a family could rely on one wage and live reasonably comfortably and apart from child benefit there wasn't the plethora of add on benefits required for people to run to stand still even with two wages coming in.
Report annie. April 28, 2016 2:42 AM BST
My parents lived on a council estate and did not claim benefits.

Both worked and my poor mother, after cooking breakfast for the family then went to a factory until 4pm then came home and cooked and cleaned until about 7pm , when hopefully she had a bit of rest unless one of my spoilt brothers wanted something ironing.

I expect that is why I have never married or had children, I did not want to be a slave for any man.  And ironing, NEVER Devil
Report Eeternaloptimist April 28, 2016 2:48 AM BST
Similar story here annie. Never claimed. My dad went to work in the mill at 6am. Mum would get us ready for school, do the housework and have us fed for when dad would be walking up the road just before 5pm. She'd meet him halfway down the road to go and do an evening shift at a different mill and he'd then be on kid duty and she'd arrive back at 10pm. They never went out socially unless it was with us kids. They were devoted to each other and us. How lucky we were.
Report annie. April 28, 2016 3:01 AM BST
Although when you think how hard they worked, especially women, it really annoys me when there are all these billionaires.  I am not a socialist because all the ones I meet or have read about do not live in the real world.  But there should be fairer distribution of money.

Why do we allow companies to make so much money but until recently pay their staff less than £7 per hour, a wage that no one can live on.

The increase in living wage is a step in the right direction, but more has to be done.  Wages need to be aligned with housing, food, energy costs etc.  Then companies can make a profit on top.
Report Coachbuster April 28, 2016 5:15 PM BST
annie quite right .

seems druggies are on a better deal than hard workers paying rent /mortgage etc.

about time  there were rent concessions for those willing to take low paid work - a bit  like housing benefit  .

ridiculous system we have
Report Crisp77 April 28, 2016 5:17 PM BST
I don't think anyone in low paid work expects to be living on a Quality Street.
Report Coachbuster April 28, 2016 5:20 PM BST
housing is the one real serious issue  imo ,  if you're on a low wage ,with a little invention you can maintain a half decent standard of living ,esp if you're canny with getting deals/discounts and are able to undertake your own tasks , but rent is a  hard nut to crack as it seems to match the market rate - mainly brought about by H/B .

Some companies could pay more ,a lot of companies CAN'T pay more  - the rich companies won't pay any more than they are forced to.
