I know a lot of artists in history that go to pot after a brief spell of amazing work. Don't think you could put it down to failing eye sight in old age.
Same in music - who listens to Paul McCartney Albums in the last twenty years? Even Prince had a falling away.
Familiarity breeds contempt. That and the fact that the kids don't want to listen to records by wrinklies but both McCartney and Prince are two perfect examples of artists making music in the last few years which was very good.

Writers and classical musicians produced great stuff into their senility. Beethoven, infamously, for years when deaf. I'm sure "image" is a lot to do with it? Having said that, I can listen to many musicians I really ike and they often seem to peak about album 2-4 and it's downhill from then. But not always.
