St Patrick's Day is only a big thing because of the millions of "plastic paddies" in New York who imagine the land of their ancestors as a giant theme park filled with drunk leprechauns.

this bit doesn't sit pretty with the religion of peace..
In the mythical tale, George obtains glory by slaying a dragon that is terrorising the countryside and is about to eat a beautiful princess. George survives the ordeal by invoking the sign of the cross.
As a mark of their gratitude, the local citizens all convert to Christianity and seek to copy George's chivalrous, princess-saving behaviour.
The dreaded C word

Not much of that around with folks projectile vomiting on the statues in the market square ofter '2 fir 1' night at Weatherspoons, whilst going for one last 'selfie'.

Does "drunk vomit" still have a lot of booze in it? I'm a cheapskate, planning my buddhist after life, and I know dogs like to eat vomit. If I can go round the Bigg Market on a saturday morning getting p*ssed and a nice meal for free, then finish my weekend off with a good old lick of me own doggy bits, I'm not sure why I'd WANT to reincarnated up the tree of life that sounds like a good life right there :)
OK I don't want to go TOO Far down the scale, and end up like of spending all me life on chit chat..

I've never really seen the point in celebrating some mythical saint who wasn't even English, if you are going to have an English celebration day I would sooner do it celebrating something from our history that actually took place.

I'll be celebrating with a bottle of 2009 Domaine Bouche Plan de Dieu La Truffiere, Cotes du Rhone Villages tonight (only because I've been looking for an excuse to drink it)

It's all hushed up - pubs don't promote like St Patricks day etc. No mention on TV / Radio leading up to it, like today it could of passed without people even realising.
How about putting a St Georges Cross flag up in your window - Nah you'd probably be looked on as racist
How do we go about celebrating it though? It's all hushed up - pubs don't promote like St Patricks day etc.No mention on TV / Radio leading up to it, like today it could of passedwithout people even realising. How about putting a St Georges Cross flag
When did the St George cross become the flag of choice for Boneheads? . Few people knew it existed before the latest incarnation of the Blackshirts adopted it.
First time I saw a Bonehead waving it I thought he was from some anonymous Eastern european tinpot nation.

The above is the kind of person Marxist teachers have turned out. Hating their country's achievements, culture and history and assuming that anybody who is proud of their country is a fascist.
Note to The Baron. We saw off Hitler while your sort cowered under the bed. We'll see off you luvvies as well.

Baron I'm not a Blackshirt (jury's out re being a Bonehead).
You could talk to me for hours explaining why white guys are cooler than black guys and I just would not get it
However, I also happen to love my flag and my country - not right or wrong and not all of my countrymen - but there's plenty to love about it and you don't even need to look very far.

Unfortunately, there will not be a Birmingham city centre event again this year because of budget cuts - and that’s left many people feeling like English culture is being swept aside (from the Birmingham Mail link) Well I'm all for the council not wasting ratepayers money but I still find public roads blocked off on certain days of the year to mark St Patrick's day and gay pride. Good to see the labour led Council has its heart in the right place.

One of the great things about being English is that we don't celebrate St George's day or even know when it is.
Flag waving and overt displays of nationalism are for the less condfident, inferior nations. So God knows why some people would want us to be like the rest.
A true Englishman just finds it all a terrible bore.

The idea of what it means to be English has been corrupted over the last 40 years. Firstly by the National Front and all its later incarnations. Also "Ingerland" football fans did their bit and now we have insecure frightened people thinking that their warped view of national pride is the way to counter the threat of the Moslem hoards.
Being English is a state of mind, waving a flag doesn't make you a patriot it just make you indistinguishable from those of lesser nations.

Being scared to wave it makes you a model citizen though.
I also think that the death of Princess Diana changed things for the worse for the British (and specifically the English) too, with the almost gleeful rebellion from the stereotyped reserved, stoicism of old Britain
