The Saturday they stopped pointing a camera at the the BBC teleprinter at 4.41 pm was the day football died imo.

As much as I enjoyed using TELEX, surely none handled it with the aplomb of Coleman during the football results.

Would Stelling's calm authority have survived those nerve-wracking moments when the printer quivered but failed to deliver? No Charlie Nicholas to turn to, no Matt Le Tissier?
And how would Simon Holt et al. have fared had they been commentating off the Exchange Telegraph? Could they have handled a telephonic interruption from Epsom with the aplomb of a Dougie Fraser or a Dave Smith? |

A question for the ages indeed SBW.
I lused to like the way the Grandstand teleprinter would sometimes emphasise an unusual shoreline, e.g 4-42 LEEDS UTD 7 (SEVEN) SOUTHAMPTON 0 D1 |

Should have used Brighton and Southampton as an example imo

The only problem with sending telegrams these days is that just aren't enough urchins in peaked caps available, all ready to run to the Telegram Office with your message in return for a shiny sixpence.
I blame the over-generous Benefits system, which has all but destroyed incentives. The sooner Sir Stafford Cripps gets a grip on the economy the better. |

The grandstand teleprinter would still be great today
4-49 Aston Villa 1 (ONE,yes they really have scored) Newcastle United 38 |

ha ha, fond memories indeed, alun. Even more so as I was at that game, as I was most home games in the Revie era. |
