I can think of many prophets in the old testament ... isiah. jeremiah.samuel.moses and others. All jews. Yet I don't see in the news Jews killing people who disrespect the prophets. This seems to be about a low threshold of respect. If you feel insecure about something you lash out if someone points it out. the killer must have felt insecure. a real believer would say... my god is big enough to defend himself.
I remember reading an article a few years ago. A journalist lived next door to a Muslim and his family. He was a lovely hospitable man. He had the journalist round for family meals and their families were very good friends. To all intents he had integrated well into our community and was a net asset of the country. One day they got into a conversation about religion. The journalist asked his friend the hypothetical question of what would happen if he insulted Mohammed. His friend turned serious and said, it would be my duty to kill you as a matter of honour. Thinking his friend was pulling his leg the journalist laughed. The look his friend gave him left him in no doubt that this was not up for discussion.
This poor, kind man didn't even insult his own religion. He blessed this country and counted his own blessings for being in a country which allowed him to practise his own religion without persecution. A religion which reveres Jesus as a prophet.
