Maybe it was a job but ex-high ranking politicians have banks and other organisations falling over themselves to offer them directorships which amounts to little more than having their name printed on the letterhead and turning up for the odd meeting for a six or even seven-figure salary.

Then there's the after dinner speaking circuit - he'll be able to make a Premier League footballer's wage from that alone.

Prime Minister David Cameron today branded comedian Jimmy Carr "morally wrong" for seeking to avoid taxes.

Media reports of Carr's tax arrangements suggest he is undertaking "straightforward tax avoidance", said the Prime Minister.

And he said it was unfair on the people who pay to watch the comic perform that he is not paying his taxes in the same way that they do.

Speaking to ITV News during a round of TV interviews during his trip to Mexico, the PM said: "I think some of these schemes - and I think particularly of the Jimmy Carr scheme - I have had time to read about and I just think this is completely wrong.

"People work hard, they pay their taxes, they save up to go to one of his shows. They buy the tickets. He is taking the money from those tickets and he, as far as I can see, is putting all of that into some very dodgy tax avoiding schemes.

"That is wrong. There is nothing wrong with people planning their tax affairs to invest in their pension and plan for their retirement - that sort of tax management is fine.

"But some of these schemes we have seen are quite frankly morally wrong.

"The Government is acting by looking at a general anti-avoidance law but we do need to make progress on this.

"It is not fair on hard working people who do the right thing and pay their taxes to see these sorts of scams taking place."

The issue here though is that nobody can honestly say they didn't expect this of people who follow that sort of ideology.
Aspiration is just a veneer to cover the fact most people are inherently greedy.
What people tend to do is keep voting in the types of political thinking that allows people to be ambitious and all the while dream that it will infact be them that gains at the expense of others.
People just want to have as easy a life as possible with as high a reward as possible for as little effort.
Somebody has to make up this shortfall, so when people keep voting in the people who implement it how can anyone pretend to be surprised?

The job of PM must be difficult, he does get a fairly decent wage however. But then working in the foundry is also difficult and it's totally disingenuous to suggest that those doing less skilled work are less deserving.....I'm damn sure which one I'd feckin go trust the more of the two.

Report dustybin • April 9, 2016 12:48 PM BST
I'm not so sure about that.
The sums don't add up. If the top 0.1% hold all the wealth then that makes them totally deficient in any contest against those who don't hold wealth come the elections.....unless the allegations are they elections are **** every time which I doubt.

No, I just think all those people who say they want a fairer society simply mean they just want to be the ones on the good side of it and keep voting for opportunism so that maybe one day they will.

Do any of you even KNOW what what a unit trust is? IF not then sthu and go read what they are and stop embarrassing yourself.

What tax has David Cameron dodged, name one?

the unit trust itself avoided uk tax to generate bigger profits. You think they are set up offshore for reasons other than tax avoidance, when most directors are resident in uk? Its legal, like owning shares in facebook or starbucks is legal.

Its politically damaging for politicians like say, i dont know, the Prime minister ok UK to profit personally from these schemes whilst at same time condemning them as dodgy and morally wrong. Compounded by taking 5 days to come clean whilst lecturing others on transparency.
Report Just Checking • April 9, 2016 6:07 PM BST
"2that 20k profit is most you could return to uk without incurring capital gains tax, nice coincidence that he cashed out under the threshold or was there more money in there?"
I mean wtf is this about. You don't hit the threshold then suddenly have to pay tax on all of it, you pay on the bit above the threshold so being a bit under it is completely irrelevant, and it was all declared anyway. But you don't like cameron, so any sense talked on this matter is in one ear and out the other.

And what the blazes has jimmy carr got to do with anything? Are lefties so gormless you think every single thing that happens abroad to do with tax must be the same thing and all bad because it's in a hot country or something? That sums it up doesn't it. So like if I buy a car in jamaica, that's the same as buying a pineapple in trinidad? They are both buying, and far away, so I presume they are.

Carr was doing something like running his entire income through a dodgy company to avoice income tax, what in gods name does have to do with buying a unit trust and paying the appropriate taxes on it?
Report Just Checking • April 9, 2016 6:09 PM BST
"the unit trust itself avoided uk tax to generate bigger profits." Prove it.

re the capital gains threshold early, you dont have to declare under the threshold capital gains to hmrc, so another example of dave flying low and under the radar to even his own tax man. dave hasnt published his tax return even after repeatedly saying he will, so you saying he declared it is nonsense.

jimmy carr is relevant for dave being a hypocrite in condemning others for what he done hiself
Report Just Checking • April 9, 2016 6:32 PM BST
"Flying under the radar", well the tax man must have been pretty stupid to not know he owned the shares as he was paying the tax on the dividends from them. You're just talking complete sh*t now, and you know it. And how do you know he didn't declare, but the total for that year was under? Not paying CGT on them is not the same as them being off the radar. If he fills out a tax return, and his affairs may have been complex enough to require this, I'd think they WERE declared.

Admitting it had been “a difficult few days”, the prime minister said he held the shares with his wife, Samantha, from 1997 and during his time as leader of the opposition. They were sold in January 2010 for £31,500, making a profit of £19,000.

Cameron said he paid income tax on the dividends but there was no capital gains tax payable

Cameron is talking about paing income tax on dividends since 97 and then selling the asset in 2010 and thus generating a capital gain below cgt threshold 20kish and as the disposal was less than 4 * threshold (40kish) under reporting or declaration limit aswell
