Thinking of going..

When is the best time of year and why but more than that, what's it like? My missus isn't keen. What is there to do there. So any of you been and what did you think? Hotel to recommend?

Our last short break was to New York and was amazing as there is, as you would think so much to actually do/see. Dubai?

Cheers in advance.

A soulless place run on slave labour.Totally artificial and sterile.Honestly Paul, for me almost anywhere else you could think of would be better. Some seem to love it though.
Report Clouseau • April 2, 2016 8:19 PM BST
Go back to New York imo.

A deeply unpleasant place. This is a short piece on the dreadful situation of migrant workers in the country.Well worth a watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMh-vlQwrmU

Went in January, three day stay then a cruise, weather was excellent mid 70's just perfect for me, plenty of touristy places a really great purpose built Marina, there is plenty to do,  also a short monorail ride to the old Dubai, personally I really enjoyed it, also  thought Abu Dhabi was worth visiting but then we were only there for the day, is it worth going ? well if you intend to go in the winter months it makes a change from the usual winter haunts that you have probably already done, flew Emirates airline, probably best flight I have taken & I have been on many, though best months if you don't like it too  hot would be Dec - March, I'm sure its not everyone's cup of tea but I was pleasantly surprised.

I wouldn't bother.

Croydon with sand

As mentioned earlier in thread, a soulless place only liked by complete feckwits

Also temperature extremely hot June, July & August, plus the humidity. Ok if you want some sun ! Dec to March the cooler months. Personally I agree with some comments on here and it's not everyone's cup of tea, a soulless place. Not for me, but others like it, some friends of ours have been back 4 times.

Mmmmm, this could be one of the few times the missus has been right about travel. She is right about just about everything else it seems....I get the picture from you all. Thanks,it's funny how some think a place is **** and others go back again and again but that's opinion.
New York was just great though for me. I would go back one day but always looking for new places...any ideas within a 7 hr flight.Grin

An artificial money pit with little to nothing to recommend it.
Report bigH • April 2, 2016 10:11 PM BST
I would just go to New York again

alternatively, there are great cities in Europe for a shortbreak

Prague
Berlin
Munich
Vienna
Reykjavik
Amsterdam

Prague is just beautiful, outstanding culture and eating out and drinking is just ridiculous value for money, the cuisine is outstanding if you cop a few helpful tips.

Even better again in czech is Brno (direct flights from stansted and luton),probably two night max kinda thing there though, can jump on the train and be in vienna in an hour or so if you fancy it or bratislava also a similar option, you'll be begging to get back to czech though once you sample vienna prices lol!

You can actually eat 3 meals in three different countries, breakfast in czech, lunch in slovakia, dinner in austria, back to czech for beers Happy

Dubai ...
love the place and been many times - fantastic shopping ...used to stop off for a few days on my way to Kish Island
then Tehran (I used to work in the Oil Industry).
Obviously don't p iss off the locals using drugs, or being pi ssed in the street (as if you would) .Laughthe penalties  can be very severe.
Hotels ...depends on how much you want to pay...look for deals on the Web.
All the shopping Malls are Air conditioned ...so temp. shouldn't be a problem.
Taxis dirt cheap so getting around easy.
Report Mr Eboue • April 3, 2016 11:13 AM BST
Seems crazy to fly to the other end of the world to hit the shops.

If I wanted that awful feeling of wandering around like a lost dog I'd visit my local High St.

My hols always seem to be standing outside Zara or something similar
while the old girl looks at the (sales)
Could easily lose her as she has a very bad sense of direction

Any ideas?

Dubai is a great place to visit, especially if you only stay a week.

Day 1: shopping (OK, window-shopping) at extremely posh shops in air-conditioned malls.
Day 2: shopping in souks.
Day 3: falconry.
Day 4: golf.
Day 5: horseracing.
Day 6: beach.

But perhaps you can say the same of anywhere, unless you combine destinations in the same country that are nowhere near each other: Moscow is a day away from St Petersburg; New York from Las Vegas or Disneyworld.
Report pantsonfire • April 3, 2016 12:37 PM BST
Moscow is actually only 4 hours by train now from St.Petersburg. Both great cities though I much prefer St.Pete. You could have a taste of both in a week. Your pounds will go a long way these days in Russia.

we had 4 days in hotel on the palm..the zabeel saray , .the same hotel they used for x factor
with nicole sherzinger and rylan. we were totally spoilt by brilliant staff, and its a wonderful hotel.

dubai is ideal as a short break or stopover on the way to or from somewhere else

Some fair opinions on here wouldn't say anything misguided, but it's not for everyone, some people love it some people hate it.

The heat - from May till October temperatures can rise as high as 115 F. Don’t worry if you will be able to stand the heat. Even the swimming pools are chilled during the summer! But lot of places air conditioned. Best time to visit would be from November till April, when the sun isn’t that harsh.

General sightseeing (easy to get around) but would say take a City Tour this will give you a good overview of Dubai. A Desert Safari. Also the Malls - the metro connects to the malls, or first of all if you just go to one - City Centre Deira.   Burj Khalifa is a def to visit. The beaches. Golf, but in the summer months just to hot to enjoy it.

Lots of unique restaurants. A lot of what you do there or places you go depends on your own interests.

You will either think it's an amazing place or you won't be so impressed, the different views on here are typical reaction to Dubai I'd say.

Went in January and loved it.  Do a skydive.  Beaches are superb.  Everywhere is spotlessly clean.  Place is pretty much maintained by an army of slaves, so if that bothers you then don't go, although most seem perfectly happy with the deal and compared to being bombed in Syria I suppose it's paradise.

It's cheap to fly there; hotels are dear on the face of it, but you get plenty for your money.  Would recommend staying in a hotel with a club lounge and paying the upgrade fee, as your booze will be inclusive.  It's about a tenner a pint in hotels, so you can gun a few beers in the club lounge and ease the pain.  Taxis cheap.

It is a bit soulless as others have said, but compared to the pissing rain in the UK in January, mid 20s seemed decent.  You could spend a fortune out there if you wanted to, but there's plenty of relatively inexpensive things to do as well.  Burj Khalifa is great.  It's attached to the Dubai Mall, which is ludicrously big, so don't get snared into a quick visit as you won't leave for about 10 hours.
