Anyone know anything about these guys?

https://www.gofundme.com/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GoFundMe

Are they legit?

I've had a quick run by the questions ... https://www.gofundme.com/questions/ ... and they seem ok.  8% deduction taken from donations and the remainder going to the Cause seems reasonable enough.

The reason I'm asking is because a page has been set up for the family of dear Mr Shah who was brutally murdered in Glasgow on Thursday night.

https://www.gofundme.com/supportformrshah

If some of you CC'ers can confirm the site is legit, let's see if we can raise a grand or two.  Can we?

This page has been set up in in support of Asad Shah who was tragically killed outside his shop on Minard Road on Thursday 24 March.  This fundraiser has been launched by myself (Jen) and friends (Lauran, Ellanor & Katie) who are all local residents in Shawlands and regular customers of Asad's.  As a resident of Waverley Garden's for over 2 years, I personally got to know him whilst visiting his shop on almost a daily basis.

Mr Shah was a popular, well respected and much loved member of our commuity and his death has devastated many. He was a warm and friendy man and he always went out of his way to make time to talk to you  -  he was more than just our local shopkeeper.  He was a friend to many.

It quickly became clear to us in the aftermath of this tragedy that the people of Shawlands (and wider) were looking for a way to show their support to Asad's family and we thought this would be a fitting way to do so.

We are raising funds for his family to use in whatever way they see most fitting - whether that be to contribute towards funeral expenses, provide financial security for his family in the coming months, or simply to do something in his memory.  We know money will never make up for his loss but this is our way of showing our support for him, and showing his family how much he was cared for in our commnity.

We are planning to keep the page open over the Easter weekend at which point we will close it down and transfer all funds raised to his family via bank transfer. Police Scotland have been notified of this fundraiser and the officers liaising with the family have our details.

Any donations, and kind words and memories of Asad will be gratefully received.

Thanks
Jen, Ellanor, Lauran & Katie x

8% deduction taken from donations

Is there a ceiling on this charge trilby?
At the £30k you are quoting that gives them £2400 which seems too much to me.
Good cause though.

From the questions link in my OP, while we wait to hear from Jen - who claims Police Scotland are fully aware of this campaign ...

Why does GoFundMe have to charge 5%?

GoFundMe has major operating expenses like any popular internet service including technology, infrastructure, payroll & benefits for our dedicated team of employees. We have purposely created a business model that allows users to sign-up and launch their campaign for free. Visitors to our users' campaigns are greeted with a frustration-free giving experience, void of advertisements and other distractions - helping our users raise even more money.

GoFundMe operates on only a 5% fee deducted from each donation received. Very few organizations can claim they help as many people on such a small percentage of gross payment volume.

In short, GoFundMe is an incredibly efficient and effective way to provide financial support to those you care about most. Not only can donors give in an extremely targeted way, but more money goes directly to the intended recipients than other organizations can claim.

Although the passing of Mr Shah saddens me deeply, I take comfort from the fact that thousands, regardless of ethnicity or religion, have responded in this way. Could the intolerant haters mobilise so many, so quickly? Of course not. They can inflict pain on us, but they can never change us, nor can they win. Mr Shah, you will be in our hearts for a very long time.
Report Ovalman. • March 28, 2016 3:52 PM BST
There are good people everywhere, that gives us hope but the haters I feel are winning. RIP Mr Shah.

In a way I feel Gofundme should drop their charges above a certain amount but in another way, sites like this give us a way to show support.

I haven't donated but I have in the past for other causes. What annoys me is the amount of spam I now get for a simple £10 donation. Action Cancer especially spam me through the post. I like to choose my donations carefully but this spamming really puts me off. I have never gave to Action Cancer online btw. I appreciate the free pens they keep sending me though, talk about wasting money.

Some nice comments and Mr Shah was obviously a well liked and decent human being.

Visitor Message from Jen Bannerman:

Hi Betfair Chitchat,

Thanks for your message and kind words. We'd originally agreed with the
family that we would run over Easter only, however I can confirm that we've
spoke to the Shah and with their permission we will be extending the
campaign until 4 April. So good news on that front.

Re: the % taken by GoFundMe - sadly this is a standard practice by GFM and
other services of this ilk. I looked around to see if there were other
crowdfunding options before starting the page but they were all much of a
muchness when it comes to the deductions. The total fee is 6.4% and I
believe there's no cap on this. It's disappointing but by using their
facility we've been able to generate much more support than we could ever
have achieved offline.

Thanks
Jen

RIP to Mr Shah and may his family be safe.
