After fourteen months of hell I'm putting it back on the market. I've hit more roadblocks than Bonnie & Clyde and although I expected problems, nothing prepared me for the jobsworths and 'protectors of our heritage'.

What sort of building did you buy, and what were you wanting to do to it?

Grade 1 or 2

Isn't it amazing, up and down the country there are empty listed buildings rotting that simply need some maintenance to bring them up to scratch, but people won't touch them with a bargepole because of this problem.

I nearly did a few years ago, a lovely G2 listed hall but a m8 at the council told me it would be a nightmare with all the repair regulations.

Grade 11 and just wanted extension and some (what I thought were minor) changes. After several changes to plans/materials and endless meetings/paperwork we arrived at a plan that "may well" be subject to approval. It's nothing like we wanted and we're tired of all the hassle. The plans will be submitted (because they've cost a bomb) and we'll let someone else have the pleasure of dealing with these luddites. Grin

please list 20 empty listed "rotting" family homes- should be easy if they exist up and down the country.

OP you knew what you were buying so stop moaning because you can't do what you want.

Here is a case were the owners simply demolished a listed house, remains to be seen
what action will be taken against them.

Might be worth seeking advice of a planning consultant if there are any grounds for de-listing the building.

Here's one...   Shadwell Court, Thetford, Norfolk.  Grade 1 listed. Designed by S S Teulon.   Empty for nearly 20 years.  Owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum.

Some near neighbours needed a pair of replacement chimney pots a few years back. The previous owner of my house had left behind a couple of dozen assorted Victorian chimney pots, which she'd been using as twee, OAP-style garden ornaments.  A couple of them were identical to the ones the neighbours needed replacing, so I let them have them in return for a flagon of cider.

Only found out by chance a couple of years later that their gaff was Grade-2 listed, and but for my generosity they would have had to pay at least a monkey each to a dealer for precisely identical pots. No wonder they were generous with the cider.

The only consolation is that I would never otherwise have discovered West Croft cider, not just different class to every other cider I've ever tasted, but possibly the finest booze on the planet.
