Writer and comedian Brendan O'Carroll tells the story of the Irish Easter Rising, in which 1,600 Irish rebels took over the centre of Dublin in Easter week 1916. Despite overwhelming odds, the rebels held out against the forces of the British Empire for six days until they were driven into submission. Three of the rebels were O'Carroll's uncles, and on the centenary of the revolt, he looks into the part his family played in it, and explores how the Rising signalled the birth of today's Republic of Ireland.

I have an Irish brother in law so feel this may enlighten me.

Hardly Leo. The forces of the British Empire were busy fighting the Germans.

akabula - despite the 1st World War, I think a  bit of simple research might show that the odds were "overwhelming".

Not disputing that but merely pointing out that the phrase Forces of the British Empire is misleading.

Not my words Aka....from TV Guide

They fought for independence from GB but have given it all up to The United States of Europe
Report The Leopard • March 16, 2016 9:35 PM GMT
....from whom we, The Brits, will assert our independence !
Report The Leopard • March 16, 2016 9:36 PM GMT
Who will be the Rebels then !!!
Report blackbarn • March 16, 2016 9:38 PM GMT
Why is it misleading, given that that is exactly who they were holding out against. I don't believe anyone would think the poster was suggesting that it was the entirety of the forces of the BECrazy.

The same thing in Scotland Leo. Wanting to break away from the Union yet wanting to be a part of the EU.

Look at the EUs vision for the future. One giant state. Already talk of an amalgamated army.
Freedom! More like Freedumb.

Yeah....we are gonna have to kick their @rse one day..... again !

^ EU, that is.

Pity I missed it, I hope they repeat

I have seen programs on this in the past, the uprising was not universally popular to begin with
because there were troops from Southern Ireland fighting in the trenches for us.

But we so over reacted , executing a great many, it became universally popular. I don't know what take this program take on this was.

Ireland has been appallingly treated by this country over the centuries, but it proved difficult to get out, we eventually had
to come up with two Irelands.

I don't think the EU has treated this country quite as bad as we treated the Irish
and we can get out without a war...just vote out in the referendum, I will.

On I-player....it was a bit light-weight....but why didn't they try to leave UK by through ballot box?
Report akabula • March 16, 2016 10:44 PM GMT
You seen either Michael Collins or The Wind that Shakes the Barley Leo?
2 good films that deal with that time.
Report Eeternaloptimist • March 16, 2016 10:50 PM GMT
The second of which was an extremely good film in my view.

Because if we did this the Protestants in the North threatened to go to War.
They would fight to be part of the UK....they did not want to live in a Catholic Ireland.

I will have to look this up again. Even we said they could have independence in the South there was a civil war in the South about the degree of independence
from the crown.

My sympathies are with the Irish(except the IRA of course)

They would have lost any vote, most people in Ireland wanted to stay part of the union. As usual the troublemakers got their way.

Just watched the trailers for the 2 films : Michael Collins and The Wind that Shakes the Barley

World Happiness report for 2016 is out:
1-Denmark
2-Switzerland
3-Iceland
4-Norway

Not counting city states there are only 3 north or west European countries not in the EU. So 3 out of 3 non-EU countries make the top 4. For the EU-28, 1 out of 28 makes the top 4.
You'd be a fool to assume REMAINing in the EU automatically leads to less happiness, but I'd rather not take my chances, cheers.
