The socket into my laptop is starting to play silly burgers with the screen display appearing in all sorts of funky colours.

I'm thinking of snipping the socket off and wiring it to a standard VGA cable - after snipping one of it's sockets off.

There are (maybe 15?) pins on the existing socket - will all the cables be colour coded in a similar fashion for me to wire them together?

I've a big beast of one of those old 19" monitors and I'm going fault find with that first to establish it's not actually the laptop socket that's on the blink.

Any advice will be muchly appreciated.

Tar

OK, I've plugged the Beast in and everything's ok, apart from the blink rate, which I can sort.

Therefore, it's defo the original monitor's cable that's dodgy - so, back to my original question, is it easy enough to snip and fix, like a 240v power cable when you want to lengthen it?

IT's a very confusing question. The laptop display will be hard wired so if you've an external display
already which will be by sounds of things VGA.
Is it not standard VGA connector already? Any laptop I've seen has a standard VGA connector (unless it's HDMI or whatever in a modern one). You can get VGA extender cables anyway.

If I had a dodgey socket but it still mostly worked, I'd put in a short VGA cable, then do something
with tape+plastic strongly secure the cable in the socket then the end of the VGA extender would become your new socket.
Ugly but would work.

Cheers, JC.
The laptop display itself, no longer exists - hence me using an external monitor, via the VGA port on my laptop.
Unfortunately, the dodgy monitor is hard wired - otherwise I would simply replace the cable.
Soooooooooooo, if I simply snipped of it's socket - which plugs into my laptop --- and it's DEFO the wiring into the socket that's deteriorated through movement, btw - how easy would it be to fuse a new VGA cable - as per your idea ... which is what I was trying to ask in the first place Grin

Once I've snipped off the sockets, will the cables be colour coded - as in brown, blue & green - for example, like power cables?

Actually, having just dismantled the dodgy monitor, I have discovered that a VGA connection exists within it's bowels.

For future reference, if anyone's interested, a standard male / male VGA cable consists of a whole loada coax style wrapping within the plastic cable cover, followed by some nylon type stuff protecting three thick cables (orange, yellow and green) wrapped in clear plastic wrapping, along with separate orange, green, black, white, yellow cables.

Yes, surgery would work but it would take a while to fuse two cables together!
