'Traumatised' Cyclists Pushed Into Canal

Police are hunting a group who have been targeting cyclists at a London canal and pushing them into the water.

Six riders - all men aged between 35 and 49 - have been left "frightened and highly traumatised" after the attacks at Westminster's Grand Union Canal.

One victim feared for his life because his feet were clipped to his pedals when he was pushed in the water.

Patrols have been increased in the wake of the attacks between 5 and 23 February, and officers have used a special order to allow them to break up groups of people suspected of crime.

Police have sifted through CCTV and have described all the suspects as black males in their late teens or early 20s.

Inspector Anna Brennan, of the Metropolitan Police, said: "These incidents have been very unpleasant for the victims, who may have not suffered particularly serious injuries, but have been left frightened and highly traumatised by what has happened to them.

"I would appeal directly to the persons responsible for these attacks to give serious thought to what they did, and just how dangerous it is. Pushing strangers into a canal is not funny, and could have very serious consequences.

"Whilst the water is not particularly deep, it is still very dangerous for anyone who cannot swim or anyone who has suffered an injury."

Black youths throw middle aged white men into canal. Not a hate crime and no double standards being applied. Just another multicultural experience in London town.

Must think there are crocodiles in the canal, ignorant savages.

My brother lives overlooking the Regents canal, and we sometimes walk along there, cyclists are not supposed to cycle along there,
most fly along like fooking maniacs, and if one of them hit me or a member of my family,
i guarantee them and there bike would end up in the drink....
However, these blacks that done this were prob just doing it ''cos there bruvs told em to , innit''.

I used to cycle along the Grand Union canal its a great way to get around London.  I nearly ended up in the drink a few times without help from anyone else.

I have been tempted to give someone a little nudge it is very easy to do, I expect these kids are doing it for a laugh.

Best beware of the bikes of Bradford, you don't want to be sidelined with a social indisposition.

Lambeth Walk

Of course cyclists are everywhere in London now as more people realise that cycling is cheaper, quicker very often, healthier, quieter, cleaner, less polluting, more social than the motor car. The next time you're crawling around London in heavy traffic the vehicle holding you up in front won't be a bike.
You are also legally allowed to ride a bike on the towpath of course.
Report Dr Crippen • March 10, 2016 12:55 PM GMT
Perhaps anyone who rides a bike should be able to swim as well?

Cyclists have got a bad name partly because the police don't enforce the law regarding cyclists riding on the pavements.

Cyclists will get little sympathy from the public.
Report bix • March 10, 2016 2:07 PM GMT
Perhaps it is time to introduce "strict liability" for road accidents. This concept operates in most countries and makes the controller of the more powerful vehicle automatically responsible for an accident, unless they can prove otherwise. Thus a cyclist is reponsible for accidents between pedestrians and cyclists and a car driver responsible for accidents involving a car and a bike.
