Approx 20 years ago the BBC used to show old episodes of Bilko around about midnight on either 1 or 2.
One episode was about Bilko and his mates training a racehorse on the base in the middle of the night. I can't remember all the details but the training of the horse involved flashing lights and a siren (think it was to get the horse used to the starting stalls).
The Captain thought he was going mad as he kept being woken up by the sound of the alarm, the lights and galloping hooves - and I laughed like a drain for every single minute of the show.
It was a timeless piece of comedy - which I'm sure would be just as funny to watch now 50+ years after it was made.

Damn shame, was going to post one of my favourite episodes (A Mess Sergeant Can't Win) which I watched this morning only now it's be taken down by Youtube along with all the other full episodes that were up this morning and all those posted above.
It's still my favourite comedy ever, I think. So sharp even though it's 60 years old. As well as Bilko the supporting characters were excellent - Colonel Hall, Sgt Ritzik and Sgt Grover in particular.
Watched an episode last week and the late George Kennedy, who died about a week ago, was in it. He played an MP, walk on non-speaking part.

Me and my mate Gary used to get stoned out our boxes watching it and would carry the characters through Princes Street.

Thanks for the reminder, Morph - I'll check Bilko out again.
Nice one!

ive emailed the programme makers probably to no avail as it was made over 50 years ago but noticed a continuity faux pas the other day. when bilko was looking after the kids and baby wanted nappy changing it was 3am ( in Kansas), he didn't know what to do so got on radio and eventually put through to army base just outside Berlin. they had to get out of bed to answer phone, now unless they are very lazy b astards ( doubtful as in army ) due to time difference of probably 7 -8 hours , i make it should have been 10am-11am in Germany.
if no answer will write to daily mail instead and they will blame it on immigration.

first one I saw this time round was 'training a racehorse' your right it's a classic.
next one I saw they were hiding a soldier's kids which had a similar theme to hiding the horse(which could only be trained at night) which took the edge off slightly.

A wonderful series. So funny even today, it was so far in front of its time.
Interestingly enough, it is often said that the brilliant cartoon series Top Cat, made just a few years later, based the characters in the feline gang on the characters in Bilko.
Can well believe that, as Top Cat himself does seem to behave like Phil Silvers did.
