Had an eye test back in 2001, got the glasses.  It made a bit of an improvement on my reading, but thought this is not for me so left them in the desk to gather dust.

Fast forward 15 years later..I can still read without specs, apart from the times that I need to increase the font size on my computer Im still good to go..

I recently found the specs that I purchased back in 2001. Tried them on, and hey presto.......I can't read a feckin thing with them on

Makes you think that wearing glasses is more of a hindrance than a help.

Got my own theory on this and may well be massively wrong!

You don't see good and are prescribed your new specs.

Hey presto....fantastic!

But then what happens is your eyes regress, so get lazy, and next check up you need correcting again and so on.

In simple terms your eyes need exercising like any other part of you.

That's why when we discovered our little girl had a very lazy left eye, and needed massive correction, but what they then did was to
prescribe "occlusion", which meant covering her right eye for an hour or so throughout the day, to encourage her left eye to strengthen.

From about the age of 40 the muscles controlling the concave/convex shape of your eyes lens, start to weaken.
Glasses for reading( long sight) or distance ( short sight) are to compensate  for these changes.
Your brain will get used to 'poor sight' over a period of time. But go for an eye test,  and you will see ( no pun intended) a big difference when correcting lenses are applied.

Peoples eyes become more longsighted as they get older, even those who are short sighted.
This means people who are short sighted when young can find their eyesight improving naturally as they get old.
Longsighted peoples sight does not improve with age but gets steadily worse.

Very true lfc; this is precisely what happened to me. I was sitting here at my PC a few years ago and went to jot something down but couldn't read it. I put this down to tiredness but from that day forth (almost instantaneously) I couldn't read without putting the writing further away. Shocked I went to the optician and lo and behold my short-sightedness had improved!
