If as you say your film viewing is so recent may I suggest a 50's Japanese b&w subtitled film you will have heard of - "Seven Samurai"
By:
Not sure when they came out but a few films directed by Alfred Hitchcock are classics and good viewing even today

CHINATOWN. Fantastic film. Jack Nicholson gives one of the best performances of his career. Polanski's classic thriller is absolutely brilliant. And some people may not know that the movie is actually all seen through the eyes of Jack Nicholson's character. He is practically in every scene, its incredibly well done. Polanski's best film.
"You're a nosy fella. Wanna know what happens to nosey fellas, they lose their noses." And Jack Nicholson has a big bandage on his nose for most of the film. Faye Dunaway also brilliant in it. Not just one of the best detective films of the 70's, one of the best detective films ever. |
By:
I loved southern comfort as well and most of the aforementioned films.
It is ages since I saw most of these films though. I am saving them for when I am ill or much older because there are sooo few good films about. Once I have seen a film I cannot watch it for years. I don't know whether this is a female thing though, maybe. The majority of the men I have known seem to be able to watch the same film repeatedly. |
By:
heaven can wait..... was quite a good film too from that era, a romantic comedy, so a bit different.
By:
The 1943 version with Don Ameche was a gazillion times better.
Which brings me to the OP. If ye want to watch "classic movies" then ye need to go back a few decades... |
By:
1941 version was good too, but i thought he wanted films from that era..?
1978 version is a good little film from that era, there are loads of old classics in black and white that never get shown any more and that is such a shame one of my favourites is jimmy cagney in the strawberry blond, |
By:
Jeez Donny i could fill the page with Cagney films. I love the bloke.
I know he wanted filums from the 80's which is why i added the bit at the bottom. |
By:
well we've given him a start, and a few hints ....up to him now
By:
Just to add to what ye said; There is a severe lack of b&w films on the box. Why this is i dunno, maybe the tapes have been lost or in these days of utter garbage film wise perhaps the powers that be think peeps would rather watch The Mummy for the 2990498498 time and it's CG crap, rather than a first rate 'classic' movie..

"The Odessa Files, Jon Voight. Title music by LLoyd Webber and Tim Rice"
Very good film, always remember the film poster at the time when Voight is on the track when he was pushed into the path of an underground train. Good story, interesting film, bit dated now but still worth watching. |

i thought someone mentioned an argentinian film that was on very early this morning but that post seems to have gone. i recorded it and watched it this morning, it was excellent.
one flew over the cuckoo nest is a great call. imo. the shining is good too. african queen, maltese falcon and cassablanca worth a shout. i know they are not old but i have become completely addicted to nordic noir. wallander, beck, the bridge and the killing i cant get enough of. there's an icelandic one currently airing on bbc4 called trapped. i dont know if its taking a whole series to solve a crime, police officers who are often deeply flawed, or something else but i consider them so much better than anything we have. i'll have to get around to reading the girl with the dragon tattoo which i've been told led the way. |
By:
Yep - you definitely need to read The Millenium Triilogy ie :-
Girl With The Dragon Tattoo The Girl Who Played With Fire The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest All brilliant. Unputadownable ! The DVDs are good too ( original Swedish versions with English sub titles ) |
