Best way to avoid halal is to avoid meat. Lots of alternatives.
Report Ibrahima Sonko • February 21, 2016 9:09 PM GMT
About time it was all labelled.

If you eat meat the likelihood is that you do eat Halal. That is the reality. Let's be honest though most people would trample over their grandma to get a chicken fifty pence cheaper and yet will burst into tears watching a programme about Vets. Hysterical, hypocritical mugs that they are.

I'll have to have a serious think then,
I've already knocked the normal cr@p of indian/kebab on the head.

I Know the supermarkets have been mixing it in for a while.

Its like a sick dream i'm in - being forced to do barbaric disgusting
things. I think im getting to the stage where i don't want to be in
this country anymore as silly as it sounds.

I agree with aka.

If it bothers you that much, then stop eating meat.
Report Mexico • February 21, 2016 10:28 PM GMT
There is not much Halal pork around , so a bacon sandwich should be OK.

No legal need to label how animal was slaughtered so pretty difficult to tell.
Report Emden • February 21, 2016 10:28 PM GMT
Ask your local butcher if it's halal or not. Not guaranteed because he may not know himself unless it's been slaughtered and supplied by a local farm. Even then it may only certain meats. Most butchers just buy off wholesalers and a lot of that is halal.

As people have said, it's everywhere and not labelled, so very difficult.
Report Wesdag • February 21, 2016 10:32 PM GMT
Indeed, stick to pork, bacon & sausages and you'll be fine.
Report mecca • February 21, 2016 10:38 PM GMT
Don't be tough on the butchers........ after all, they are just trying to make a prophet.

Ron - as advised you'll be safe with Pork.  You'll almost certainly be safe with Supermarket chicken, turkey and other fowl.  The gassing process used by most suppliers makes it much cheaper than the Halal process because the pre-stunning, sharp knife, robes and prayers makes it more expensive.

Not sure where you live, but any good proper butcher should be able to allay your fears, probably best, given your sensitivities to avoid those of the Jewish faith.   That reminds me, must order the Brisket for the weekend Salt Beef.
Report Ron-Russian • February 22, 2016 8:35 PM GMT
Some good advice - Cheers.

Think i'll stick with pork.

If so much more expensive blackbarn how come supermarkets have been
apparently mixing it in in the past? people used to say to put more
of a demand on it, don't know if that's true!  just think we should
100% know exactly what we're eating

Pork Madras, sounds nice Happy
Report Mexico • February 22, 2016 8:48 PM GMT
Would been to see the figures for cost regarding not having Halal chicken at supermarket because of cost.

There are a few processes to go through in getting from a living chicken to a dead, gutted, washed, beheaded, feathers removed, transported, put on shelf.
How much money would killing by halal rather than gas add to the cost of a chicken. Would it be less than 5p?

Without labels is going to be difficult to know what supermarkets are selling.
Report Ron-Russian • February 22, 2016 8:55 PM GMT
You would think muslims know exactly what they are eating with the amount
of halal shops clearly selling halal meat.

shame we're not given the same luxury
Report blackbarn • February 22, 2016 9:15 PM GMT
Mexico - of course all the processes you describe are common to both. The Halal and Shechita process just add extra steps to the process and of course additional human intervention, which all adds cost.  Of course, labelling would be best but knowing something is Halal doesnt really help when it could have been killed by any number of undesirable (to many) processes, and Halal (if pre-stunned) is in my opinion about as good as it gets, for us carnivores.  As has been posted on here, if you are fussed, get your meat from a proper butcher who can guarantee his source and slaughter methods.
Report Mexico • February 22, 2016 9:34 PM GMT
Black - I agree that the label should not be Halah/non halal, but more detail about stunning etc.
Not plesent reading for many buying their shrink wrapped lamb chops.

The butcher option is nice but for a large % of the population not really practical. Many high streets in small towns/ large villages lost the butcher, bakers, greengrocer many years ago.
Pretty much zero chance of turning the clock back 20 years.

Put labels on meat , then Ron (& others) could make an informed choice.
Report blackbarn • February 22, 2016 9:47 PM GMT
Good stuff Mexico - Forget Halal and replace with "this animal was pre-stunned before being killed by traditional slaughterhouse methods." This could even be a new qualifier for the red tractor logo.

You say the butcher option is nice, and you are suggesting that this is in the past. For my meat that is not home raised, I do get it from my local butcher. BUT I now get beef/lamb mince and Sausages for my two daughters there because it is cheaper than their Supermarket alternatives.  I get them burgers too which ARE more expensive but a quantum leap in quality.

Laws governing religious slaughter
‘The Welfare of Animals (Slaughter or Killing)
Regulations 1995’ sets out specific requirements
for the slaughter of animals by the Jewish and
Muslim methods. These Regulations implement
EC Directive 93/119/EEC. The Regulations state
that, amongst other things:
• The animal’s throat must be cut by one rapid
uninterrupted movement of the knife.
• Both carotid arteries and both jugular veins
must be severed.
• The knife used to slaughter the animal must
be inspected before each animal is
slaughtered to make sure it is of sufficient
size and sharpness to slaughter that animal.
Following lobbying by the RSPCA, further
amendments to the regulations (‘The Welfare of
Animals (Slaughter or Killing) (Amendments)
Regulations 1999’) also provide that religious
slaughter can only take place in a licensed
slaughterhouse. This came into force in the UK in
March 1999.
Report Ron-Russian • February 22, 2016 10:39 PM GMT
Although there are differences in the way
animals are slaughtered by the Shechita
(Jewish) and Halal (Muslim) methods, both
involve cutting the animal’s throat with a very
sharp knife, in many cases without any form of
stunning. The teachings of the Jewish and
Muslim religions state that an animal must be
fully alive before it is slaughtered. Accordingly,
the stunning of an animal before slaughter may
be interpreted as being against such religious
teachings.

that's the RSPCA w/site - Basically as you'd expect they've got a licence to do as they please

Number of animals slaughtered by
religious methods
In 2015 the Food Standards Agency (FSA)
published an Animal Welfare Survey
undertaken in abattoirs across Great Britain in
a one week period in September 2013. The
survey provided numbers of animals
slaughtered/killed by the Shechita and Halal
methods and indicated that a low percentage of
animals killed by all methods during this time
were not stunned before slaughter; with 2% of
cattle, 15% of sheep and goats, and 3% of
poultry slaughtered in Great Britain not receiving
a pre-slaughter stun¹. The survey showed that
around 84% of animals slaughtered by the Halal
method were stunned before slaughter.

that has got to be the biggest load of ******** i've ever read, so from that we're led to
believe the by far majority are fine to eat stunned halal even though the religion says no?

Yeah right
Report blackbarn • February 22, 2016 11:10 PM GMT
Ron - wheres the bit from the same RSPCA site that says that 84% of Halal kills are pre-stunned. What exactly is your objection here? Killing without pre-stunning? (that's chicken, turkey and other fowl out then).

Hang on, I know its the Muslim bit that troubles you isn't it.
