queued for ages, climbed loads of steps, walked around top of a building with views of Rome, came down, walked in a big hall, saw a dead pope in a case, queued to see Sistine Chapel, saw painted ceiling, and left.
That's it really ... oh, had the world's most expensive coffee on way back to hotel.
When in Rome, just go home, I say.
PS Coliseum in ruins

Being a christian is a moving target, wasn't long ago being a christian seemed to mean burning alive or mass slaughter of anyone who disagreed with all the specifics of your doctrine. Is the pope, in all his infallibleness, saying that all the previous christians, weren't christians? Is he going to dig up old popes and bury them outside christian burial grounds?
"Let them all in, and let god sort them out" isn't so dramatic.

Re the vatican, yes it's well worth a visit. There is also a separate vatican museum that you may want to pre-arrange as it's huge and busy. When you are in the queue for the vatican museum, take note of possibly the biggest wall you'll ever see beside you.

Was in Rome 18 months ago and have to admit it was awesome. Luckily had pre- bought tickets for the museum as the queues were huge. Big signs in the Systene Chappel saying no talking or photos , although most of the noise came from security guards telling the Japs not to take photos.

TBH I was underwhelmed by the Sistine Chapel, but the vatican was better than I expected. Also you see the Sistine Chapel is at the end of the Vatican Museum so you've already seen hours of "cool stuff". Rome is a great city though.

Visited the Vatican many years ago. Main memories include the sheer size of the interior of St. Peters, and on an upper floor seeing the treasures of the Catholic Church. Our crown jewels would look totally insignificant in their displays, showcase after showcase crammed with all sorts of gold, diamonds etc.
