A successful and well run country must always have a shortage of labour. This is not the same thing as having no unemployed.
Britain has the worst of all situations, an oversupply of labour and also high unemployment. |

Many jobs are fictitious.....there was a check done.

Job agencies do advertise fictitious vacancies but the quoted figures come from the ONS and I'm pretty sure they gather this information directly from employers.

In fact, when I was employed, I did complete an ONS return on a quarterly basis.

Job vacancies are not the problem, there must always be tens of thousands of job vacancies. That is not the same thing as saying we don`t have enough labour.
The aim of a well run economy is to create vacancies. Peoples wealth, and the countries economic wealth depends on job vacancies and a shortage of labour. Only when there is a labour shortage do the middle and working classes prosper. |

By:
How many job vacancies do you think a country should have at any one time. Tens
Hundreds, thousands, millions?..the figure is meaningless. |
|
By:
what would we do about the other 900,000 or so?
It's not as simple as that, jobs are coming and going all the time. There's always a float of people between jobs. If all the jobs were all snapped up more would appear straight away. It's just a matter of grabbing one. |
|
By:
In decades gone by they considered 400,000 unemployed as full employment.
They maintained that there is always that number of people between jobs. |
|
By:
Crippen is right, do not belive the propaganda about vacancies, it is impossible for the numbers to align at any given time.
|
|
By:
it's all daft as most jobs don't need doing anyway ,theyre just there to fill holes in folks lives , so folk have something to do/somewhere to go ,but we could exist on a 10 hour week quite easily provided the skills were distributed.
we can import or export work as and when it suits us |

By:
The jobs aren't necessarily where the people are.
Lots of people think certain jobs are beneath them. |
|
By:
The figures are doctored. Add on the amount of people on government schemes and work experience and on some crummy college course and the true figure is about 10 million unemployed and that`s not counting the Royal Family.

i_agree_with_nick - The only thin the ONS get correct are Death Certificates, because these can Not be manipulated.
500,000 people went missing from The Government Registers in Scotland during the Early 1980`s Poll Tax Revolution, Since they all could not have been Abducted by Aliens, The ONS said they had all Emigrated, since Border Security/Home office did Not keep records, they believed this, However 3 - 400,000 of these "Emigrates" turned up to vote in Scotlands Devolution/Seperation vote. 2 Million UK Jobs are taken by Immigrants, last night`s news, Just remember that when Your Relatives cant get a Job. |

themightymac is correct. True figure hidden as millions classed as 'economically inactive' and thus not included in the figures. Also many part time on min wage/zero hours contracts etc.
