Increased awareness of mental stability can only be a good thing.

Depression is a chemical imbalance; and although too easily trotted out by non sufferers, for those who genuinely have the illness deserve our sympathy and not be subjected to narrow minded insults.
Report lfc1971 • February 16, 2016 7:49 AM GMT
Anyone stupid enough to equate mental illness with cancer I will try to make this simple..you do not have to fear someone with cancer.
Report Dr Crippen • February 16, 2016 10:13 AM GMT
The strange thing is that depression only seems to affect certain groups of people.
You don't see many time workers who depend on their wages and don't get paid when they're not at work getting it, or the self employed.

They don't get paid when they're not at work so they just get on with it.

Unless they have a family and get more on benefits, then they tend to suffer from depression.

I'll accept that many cases of depression are very serious and will completely incapacitate the suffers.

Others play it up to get more benefits or in the case of Fry to simply draw attention to himself and make money from it.
For what other reasons would he have for telling the world about it?
Report Ozymandius • February 16, 2016 10:20 AM GMT
education and awareness?
Report Eeternaloptimist • February 16, 2016 10:28 AM GMT
To help raise awareness? To tell those who have mental health problems that if successful people have it therefore it isn't their "fault". One thing I can say with absolute certainty during my brief stint working in hospital with the worst affected people is that mental health problems affected people from all walks of life. The worst thing I could say about personal responsibility is that things like drugs were more likely to exacerbate any underlying tendency towards difficulties.

As for fearing people with mental illness in the majority of cases you don't have to fear them. Some you do. Unfortunately it is attitudes like that which cause the stigma associated with mental health problems. Far more could and should be done to help people with such problems and the single biggest thing isn't to pay your ten bob to point and laugh but to actually care about the welfare of friends, neighbours and other people in society who are blighted by such health problems.

^ EE in taking sense shocker !

Yes, drug use must be causing thousands of cases of mental health problems( as admitted by trilby22 and dustybin)  but a certain proportion will be using drugs as self-medication.

Is everyone that gets down a manic depressive/bipolar?  If not can those that don’t get a proper diagnosis be dismissed as weak?  Similar thing with dyslexia.  What if you can’t spell or do maths and that and struggle in exams but don’t get diagnosed with dyslexia?  I mean not all thick children are dyslexic are they, some are just thick whereas dyslexics aren’t.  They’re dyslexic.

Fwiw I like Stephen Fry and he doesn’t really drone on and on about it (or his homosexuality) just 2 programmes in 10 years.  He no doubt answers questions about it when asked and if people want to put that in newspapers that is up to them, if people read it it is also up to them.  When Stephen  Fry speaks, I listen though.
Report Dr Crippen • February 16, 2016 11:39 AM GMT
education and awareness?

They let him work for free on these programmes.
I think if that were the case, you'd find his eagerness for education and awareness would quickly evaporate.

If he were as ill as many are who have these mental problems, he wouldn't be capable of making programmes about it.

What does he do - turn it on and off at will?

There is a fine line between genius/intelligent creative people, and madness/depression and destructive behaviour. In the past Stephen Fry has shown all these. Just that fine line between genius and insanity.

There's that flash of temper from Facts again.

If anyone suffers from mental problems it is Facts.
Report Dr Crippen • February 16, 2016 2:12 PM GMT
Many depressed people like Facts get diagnosed as ''anxiety hystericals.''

Sometimes defined as those who are unable to express themselves sexually.

The flash temper, the sadistic urge to inflict pain on others through their own lack of being able to express themselves, is a common trait amongst these individuals.

Fortunately there's a very good remedy for this, and I'd prescribe it especially for Facts.

It is in layman's terms -  a damn good hiding.

Report Dr Crippen • February 16, 2016 4:19 PM GMT
Yes DO, but I can't understand why you have to be so rude

There are degrees of how people are affected by depression.
At the one end of the scale as I've already said, a person can be completely incapacitated by depression for long periods.

And at he other, a lesser bout of depression can be shrugged off quite easily by  time and a few good night's rest.

Why you have to get so upset over an issue like this is a mystery to me.
Report lfc1971 • February 16, 2016 4:48 PM GMT
People with mental health issues wreck the lives of all those around them. They are the most selfish and uncaring individuals and elderly parents, even ill and frail themselves can have their lives tormented by these relatives.
There is no other solution but to stay as far away as possible from them, they will be merciless in their attempt to create chaos.

Well, whilst not technically a 'solution', I can see how this might suit some people.

Again, they're ill. I'm sure in the majority of cases, if they could appreciate the chaos they cause, they would be mortified.

Is everyone that gets down a manic depressive/bipolar?

No Rob. Depression is a condition in itself. Getting down has nothing to do even with depression. Specifically in relation to getting down and depression it's a bit like comparing a cold with the flu. If you're in bed feeling off with a heavy cold and someone tells you there is a £20 note sat in your garden you'd get up grab it and head off back to bed. If you've got the flu you may not even register what the are going on about and you wouldn't be getting out of bed to go outside. That's the difference between being down and depressed. Depression can last for a long time, sometimes months or even longer.

Manic depression/bipolar can be extremely debilitating even if treated well. My neighbour has it and life is a constant difficulty for him. I remember being on placement for eight weeks on the mental health ward and there was an opera singer there because her depression was such that she didn't get out of bed to do anything, be it eat, wash or even speak to people. This had been ongoing for some time before I arrived and then after about four or five weeks of my placement she started to come up until a few days later when she began to sing. After that point you couldn't shut her up. She was singing all night. Thankfully medications have moved on since these times and the condition is better managed.

Not wishing to get too technical but there are all manner of conditions that it simply isn't possible to take a broad brush approach to in diagnosis and treatment. Some people have an illness. A bit like a broken leg. You have the illness and then you get better. Other people have a disorder which forms part of their personality and despite improvements in treatment it forms a part of who they are. Personality disorders can be very disruptive for the person and loved ones. They're still human being who deserve compassion even though their condition can make them extremely trying and hurtful to themselves and those around them.

I remember as part of my degree looking into the Christopher Clunis case and it was a perfect illustration of hat happens when you proclaim you are moving to a care in the community system of help and don't put the resources into providing the case aspect.

Walk a mile in their shoes.
