We were asked to submit our holidays for the coming year. We all did ours in the office and there was no comeback over any issues. Ive just checked and mine has been moved to a week earlier in June as another girl in the office is off at the same time as me. We have both booked and paid for our holidays now. When i questioned HR I was told the area manager was supposed to have talked to us both to come up with a compromise, he never said a word to any of us and just moved mine back a week. We are now being told we cant both be off the same week. Where do I stand with this as ive said we have both paid to go away and there was no dialogue or effort to sort it from above.

Also, at the time he should have spoken to us I would have gladly changed mine to accomodate hers.

Submit a holiday form, it is returned signed and approved or rejected.

Ib is right that's the correct procedure.

Unless you have something signed confirming them dates you haven't got a leg to stand on,
come across similar instances where they've refused the dates after employees had booked & paid
assuming they would get them weeks they'd put forward.

I work with a Dublin mob.

I don't get paid holidays.

I don't even have a contract - count yourself lucky.

No one has anything signed or any kind of confirmation, its the discussion that should have taken place to resolve it thats annoying me the most. If needs be I will go on the sick for a week.

David Fishwick, you have got it in one, Chapel St Leonards, close enough.

The original request for our holidays was over a month ago, nothing since then to say no to either of us or find a compromise.

Sound like you have a leg to stand on then,

there needs to be a clear system in place - Manager incompetence problem?
Report Roger The Butler • February 15, 2016 9:09 PM GMT
Blackest, you say you never received anything to say no, but did you get anything to say yes your request had been granted?

Appreciate you seem to have been shafted here, but unless there is any other info, you booked a holiday with your request pending and never approved?
Report blackestnight • February 15, 2016 9:19 PM GMT
Then so did the other girl, and they havnt moved hers.
Report Roger The Butler • February 15, 2016 9:23 PM GMT
Yes, that's why I saw you appear to have been shafted and I definitely sympathise. But I assume they would be within their rights to say that they never approved that week for you.

What would normally happen when you submit a holiday request - do you get an email to say it is approved? How long after submitting do you normally hear back? Presumably you would normally hear back one way or the other?

you are in a lose lose situation,

if you kick up - the bird might lose her holiday
if you go sick - you could get the bullet

it sounds like theres not a proper system in place, surly that's
down to the manager, but he'll have his @rse covered as you have nothing signed
saying the dates were fine

Would your colleague(s) back you up...?
Report akabula • February 15, 2016 11:36 PM GMT
You should have made sure your dates had been accepted before booking your holiday.

I phoned ACAS over a similar situation where I had my holiday agreed, in writing, and was asked to change it. I did so but wanted to know where I stood. I was informed that they can ask for me to change it but if I don't, and it has been agreed in writing, there is nothing the company can do if I chose to take it anyway.
