If the Beeb ever repeated them again, do you think they would agonise about showing the Papa Lazarou character, for fear of offending some human tragedy somewhere in the world? After all, if the Black and White Minstrels were 'offensive' , why wasn't Lazarou? Ot was it some sort of Ironic Pretendy Racism and thus OK?
Normally a white actor only has to reach for the 'blackface' make-up and the word 'racism' won't be far behind it. It's completely OK of course for non-white actors to play white people (and not even bother with the make-up), as hilariously seen at the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony and many other places.
I'd love to be a fly on the wall watching and listening to the luvvies agonise over it. Lest we forget, some of Fawlty Towers was edited during one of the BBC's run of repeats to trim some of the Major's more colonial type expressions from the broadcast, lest the skies fall in, or an illegal immigrant in a Calais migrant camp claim his Human Rights were infringed.
A great series indeed. If the Beeb ever repeated them again, do you think they would agonise about showing the Papa Lazarou character, for fear of offending some human tragedy somewhere in the world? After all, if the Black and White Minstrels were
The first two series actually had a weird and loose story line...and that was genius

* The real Royston Vasey is a good friend of one of my brothers and his missus.

Hokey-cokey, pig in a pokey! [Clears throat] Hello, gents...oh, it's half-past nine. Time for men, men with jobs, to go to work! Other men stay in bed 'til dinner time, watching Tots TV, thinking about how worthless and pathetic they are... Good morning Jobseekers!
